Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles Announced for WWE Extreme Rules 2016 PPV
WWE Payback just ended, but the main event for WWE Extreme Rules has already been made.
Fresh off defending his WWE World Heavyweight Championship on Sunday against AJ Styles, Roman Reigns will defend the title in an Extreme Rules match against The Phenomenal One on May 22 at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, per WWE Universe.
After Payback ended, Raw co-general managers Shane and Stephanie McMahon agreed to give Styles a rematch and felt Extreme Rules was the perfect venue.
Sunday's match went well over 30 minutes, but the McMahon general managers restarted it twice. Reigns couldn't get back in the ring to break the 10-count, and Shane announced the match would restart with no count-out. After a low blow from Reigns to Styles, Stephanie restarted the match and made it a no disqualification contest.
The fireworks continued. Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows helped their Bullet Club buddy and delivered their Magic Killer finisher on the champion. Styles followed that with a Phenomenal Forearm, but Reigns got his right foot on the bottom rope just before the referee's hand came down for the three.
The Usos evened the playing field by going after the new tag team. Styles was going for a top-rope move, but Reigns shoved Styles off the top turnbuckle and took out the ringside spectators.
Styles went for one more Phenomenal Forearm, but Reigns ducked it and delivered a spear to Styles for the three to retain the belt.
Reigns took to Twitter to thank his family for helping him at ringside:
There was growing anticipation Anderson and Gallows would turn on Styles during the match, but that was not the case. Instead, Styles technically lost cleanly despite the ample amount of interference. Now the two will go at it again with no disqualification, no count-outs and plenty of weapons.
This decision is a good call by WWE. No other Superstar is in a position to face Reigns fresh off one pay-per-view. Styles put on a show Sunday and proved he and Reigns can have a main event-worthy match. What this means for Anderson and Gallows—and possibly Finn Balor—is unclear at the moment. WWE has a worthy feud to work with for the next few weeks, and that's what Reigns needs right now.
