Manchester United Transfer News: Memphis Depay Fuels Exit Rumours on Instagram

Manchester United winger Memphis Depay has sparked rumours he could be on the move this summer after conducting a social media cull of all things Red Devils related. 

As reported by Sky Sports presenter Hayley McQueen, the Dutchman’s 2.3 million followers on the social media platform will no longer be able to browse snaps of him in United gear, as he removed all but one of the images on his page. It’s also reported he has unfollowed his team-mates at Old Trafford:

While it was anticipated Depay may take a while to adapt to the robust style of English football, it’s been a season to forget for the winger.

The youngster arrived at United with a reputation as a dazzling forward, capable of taking on opponents, scoring goals and bringing fans to their feet. And although there have been some glimpses of raw talent in 2015-16, Depay has frustrated for the most part when handed chances by manager Louis van Gaal.

Barney from Red News joked about the decision made by Depay to strip down his social media account:

Still, it doesn’t paint a picture of a player who is happy. The 22-year-old was so effective at PSV Eindhoven because he had confidence in himself and from the rest of the team, plus a freedom from the manager to go and influence games in the final third. It seems that personal conviction isn’t quite there any more.

United writer Liam Canning thinks it’d be a big mistake to part ways with Depay now, especially having been stung recently by giving up on a player too soon:

Next season is a huge one for the flying Dutchman. Granted, there have been times this season when Van Gaal could have made things a little easier for Depay and the rigid system deployed early in the campaign didn’t cater to his strengths. However, the onus is on the player to show he can be a threat on a much more consistent basis.

There are plenty at Old Trafford who will preserve patience in Depay to come good. Nevertheless, the Red Devils spent big money on the forward, and there will come a point where it’s imperative he delivers on that investment.
