Vaudevillains Are Perfect for Enzo and Cass in Future WWE Tag Team Title Feud

Alfred KonuwaApr 29, 2016

Monday night on Raw, the two most popular acts in WWE—the New Day and Enzo and Cass—stood in the same ring.

Both teams rose to popularity by capitalizing on black culture trends that have captivated young America, from "keep it 100," to the Dab to the #RunningManChallenge, which the New Day performed as it danced to the ring.

Also present were the Vaudevillains, whose throwback values evoked the purposefully unpopular line "we are going to party like it's 1899."

The Vaudevillains' straight-ahead, simplistic approach creates the perfect foil for the swagger and flavor of both the New Day and Enzo and Cass. Everything about the Vaudevillains, from their brawling style to their entrance, is in black and white.

In order to soar as despicable heels, as opposed to a throwaway tag team in a loaded division, Aiden English and Simon Gotch need to be positioned as foils against a much hipper team.

Luckily for Enzo and Cass, the New Day does not need this feud.

Closing in on 300 days as tag team champions, the New Day has been there and done that in the division. The stable is among the hottest entities in WWE as it consistently ranks in the top 10 in merchandise sales on WWE Shop. Despite WWE investing God knows what in a spectacular Booty-O's entrance, the New Day didn't even defend the tag team titles at WrestleMania.

At this point, the New Day is better served moving into more of a main event role to further capitalize on its popularity in an unhip, low-rated television product that needs a spark.

A win over the New Day for the Vaudevillains would not only catapult the upstart tag team to the top of the ranks, it would make them more despised than any other duo. Contrasted with the rising phenomenon that is Enzo and Cass, the two could feud all summer in a rivalry that would make both teams relevant.

In order to milk a potential Vaudevillains-Enzo and Cass feud, there needs to be a chase. Enzo and Cass were able to maintain their popularity in NXT because their story never really ended. There was always a thirst among fans for the team to win the big one, but it never happened.

Despite multiple opportunities to capture the tag team titles, they always came up short, thereby embodying the scrappy underdog spirit of Enzo, the team's emotional leader.

That dynamic added a heightened sense of urgency and support for Enzo and Cass in tag team championship matches, most notably against the Revival at the Roadblock live special, where it was clear their popularity had bled over to WWE crowds.

During Enzo and Cass' run in NXT, not only were they always chasing the NXT Championships, but the champions in question were comparatively dull. Blake and Murphy and the Revival, who were chief rivals, often received jeering chants from NXT crowds who couldn't tell them apart. ("Which one's Dash? Which one's Dawson?")

These weren't the pretend heels embodied by the likes of Kevin Owens, who is consistently cheered, they were legitimate villains, and fans wanted to see them fall.

Chasing an old-fashioned team like the Vaudevillains would create a similar dynamic, further adding to the appeal of Enzo and Cass.

In a long, well-told feud, any pop from an elusive tag team championship win would be layered with the thirst of their days in NXT.
