WWE Payback 2016: Titles Most Likely to Change Hands at Event
With some titles staying in the hands of their owners at WrestleMania 32—one belt in particular was not even defended—expect some changes at Payback 2016.
That pay-per-view is built around the continuation of rivalries that either weren't finished or were set up at 'Mania, and expect this year's show to be no different.
Some new champions can expect to hang on to their titles through Payback and beyond, but for those in jeopardy, a difficult night may await them at the show.
Here are three titles in particular that could be set for new owners.
WWE Tag Team Championships
The fact that the tag titles weren't even defended at WrestleMania this year was somewhat of a disappointment, but at least it ensured that The New Day could remain champion even with a loss to The League of Nations.
The League went through a change in personnel on Raw the following night when King Barrett was effectively kicked out of the group. That would have initially suggested a charge toward a three-on-three bout with The New Day with the titles on the line, but the attack from The Wyatt Family may change that.
Even if The League of Nations doesn't challenge The New Day, though, you suspect its reign may be drawing to a close.
With Enzo and Cass now stepping up from NXT, there seems to be a real emphasis on the depth of the tag division. There is some genuine talent throughout, and no matter whom The New Day faces at Payback, this could be the night that the titles finally slip through its grasp.
With that said, plenty of fans would love to see it hold on to them until Enzo and Cass are ready to fight for the titles, as the promo work alone would be unmissable.
United States Championship
Kalisto's victory against Ryback on the pre-show at WrestleMania was way back at the start of the evening. Thus it already feels like a long time ago.
Throw in the fact that there was no storyline development with Kalisto or Ryback on Raw, and you get the feeling that the United States Championship is ready for a change.
That's a huge disappointment, as Kalisto showed plenty of promise during his early days as champion, but as WrestleMania approached, he had to take a back seat for some of the main event feuds.
His time will come again, but with Undertaker and the company's other part-time talent now stepping away from the limelight post-WrestleMania, it's time to put this title back on television in a much more prominent way.
WWE has shown that it has plenty of talent waiting in the wings for a shot, and even if it isn't going to be Ryback, the next guy who steps up to face Kalisto—probably at Payback—will have a great shot at winning the belt.
Intercontinental Championship
If shock victories are what make a championship prominent and interesting, then the Intercontinental Championship is in an exciting place at the moment.
Zack Ryder's win at WrestleMania took almost everyone by surprise, as did The Miz's win the following night and the return of Maryse to WWE.
That whole 24 hours created an interesting situation and a fairly fresh storyline which will be interesting to see played out over the coming weeks.
Expect Ryder and The Miz to drag their feud out to Payback, and although it's tough to predict what will happen in between, you would have to expect Ryder to get his title back at some point.
Otherwise, all the promise and potential Ryder had when he claimed the title at WrestleMania will have been for nothing.
