NCAA Women's Basketball Bracket 2016: Selection Show TV, Live Stream Schedule

Andrew GouldMar 13, 2016

Sports fans are regularly trained to expect the unexpected, but that rule doesn't apply to the NCAA women's basketball tournament.

While the men's bracket will be defined by parity, the usual suspects have dominated the women's division all year. Awarding the undefeated UConn Huskies their fourth consecutive title feels more like a spoiler than a prediction.

Any underdogs who are looking to play the Cinderella role will likely get stuck sweeping the floor as the favorites fight for the grand prize. Yet Notre Dame, South Carolina and Baylor, entering the tournament with one loss apiece, are all potent No. 1 seeds capable of producing an epic Final Four.

There's no need for a drum roll before revealing the nation's top seeds.

Unless someone forgets how to count, the Huskies will earn the No. 1 seed. Seems appropriate for a 32-0 team outscoring the opposition by a ridiculous 39.7 points per game. Their pursuit of perfection seeming mundane speaks volumes about their sheer dominance.

Anyone looking to poke holes in the UConn dynasty will say it only beat No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 5 Maryland by 10 while narrowly outlasting No. 3 South Carolina by 12. Despite winning every game by double digits, the Huskies rank No. 3 in RPI behind Notre Dame and Baylor, per NCAA.com. Although fueled by a more favorable schedule, this speaks to the metric's flaw as an overused, imperfect stat.

Huskies head coach Geno Auriemma didn't sound worried about defeating the best of the best after crushing No. 21 South Florida in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) championship game.

"Every time we play a team that is supposed to be really, really good, we play better," Auriemma said, per ESPN.com. "These players love to play against good players. They love to play against good teams."

Since the AAC's formation three years ago, the Huskies are 110-1, with an overtime loss last year marking their only blemish. Pursuing her fourth title in as many years, senior Breanna Stewart is enjoying another incredible season.

Awarding her Player of the Year honors, espnW.com celebrated one of the most decorated college careers ever:

"

Stewart is averaging team highs with 19.2 points and 8.3 rebounds, plus 107 blocked shots. She's second on the team in assists with 125. For her UConn career, she has scored 2,554 points and pulled down 1,113 rebounds, plus she has a double-double no one has ever had before in Division I women's basketball: topping 300 in assists (404) and blocked shots (395).

"

Connecticut's top challenger, Notre Dame has fallen short in three straight Final Four meetings, the last two in the championship bout. This season, the Fighting Irish and South Carolina Gamecocks only have UConn defeats in their loss column. Both will net top seeds, but only one can avoid the Huskies until a possible title clash.

Last year, all four No. 1 seeds (UConn, South Carolina, Notre Dame and Maryland) made the Final Four. The Terrapins will likely have to settle for a No. 2 slot while the Baylor Lady Bears return to the top tier. Since a stunning loss to Oklahoma State, the Big 12 champions are 20-0 with a plus-20.3 scoring margin.

Although the tournament includes 64 participants, only a handful harbor realistic championship dreams. And even those aspirations are far-fetched for anyone other than UConn.
