David De Gea Injury: Manchester United Star Out vs. Sunderland
Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea missed Sunday's Premier League match with Sunderland.
Manager Jose Mourinho announced prior to kick-off that De Gea would be out of action after picking up an unspecified injury, per United's official Twitter account:
Mark Froggatt of the club's official website reported that "De Gea's problem is not thought to be serious, although it remains to be seen whether he will feature in Thursday night's Europa League quarter-final first-leg tie away to Anderlecht."
However, Stuart Mathieson of Manchester Evening News noted that De Gea "will be OK for Chelsea next Sunday."
Mourinho confirmed that after the match in an interview with BBC Sport (h/t Mark Froggatt of ManUtd.com).
"He has a problem with his hip," Mourinho said. "When he dives he feels it a little bit. It's good for him to have a rest. It's good for Sergio Romero to play before Brussels. De Gea will probably be fit for Chelsea—yes, if he's in good condition."
Reserve stopper Sergio Romero deputised in De Gea's absence.
Romero made only 10 senior appearances for Manchester United during the 2015-16 season and was firmly installed as No. 2 earlier in the campaign once De Gea penned a new four-year contract at Old Trafford in September 2015.
The Spaniard came back into the lineup and immediately helped United re-establish their spot as one of the best defences in the Premier League despite a disappointing 2015-16 campaign overall for the club.
For now, fans will hope to see the underused Romero protect their goal with the same impact. He has made 11 appearances across the UEFA Europa League, EFL Cup and FA Cup this season, keeping clean sheets in eight of them.
That may well be enough against the Black Cats, but fans will be hoping De Gea is only absent for the one game.
