A Tribute To The Showstopper Of Our Generation
Fear not readers, this isn't another article where I go down memory lane and tell you what happened in the whole career of Shawn Michaels. This isn't another explanation of why he might be the Greatest [insert title here] of all time.
I won't talk about how he was part of one of the greatest factions of all time, D-Generation X, or how he created controversy, yet at the same time had a huge impact on the company when he became a part of the Montreal Screwjob.
As much as I want to write more than just two of his achievements in his career, and all the things he has done in the company, I will not. We all know about his life, and you've heard it again and again. I'm sure you don't need to hear it from me one more time.
So what am I going to write about? Simply put, I will pour out my heart and explain to you why I love him and find him to be amazing in and out of the ring. If you can feel just a little bit of my passion, then I've done my job.
So here we go...
The Headliner. The Icon. The Main Event. The Showstopper. Mr. Wrestlemania. The Heartbreak Kid.
A man isn't given nicknames, he earns them.
Shawn Michaels may very well be the wrestler with the most nicknames. The only reason they didn't add 'Show-Stealer' was because it didn't sound right. It didn't have a nice ring to it like all the other ones.
The moment I hear the drums that start the song 'Sexy Boy,' I get goosebumps. I just get so pumped up. When he comes out on to the stage, dancing and jumping, I just get caught up in the moment. I just love experiencing it every single time.
The pyro in the background, the way he skips into the ring, and then the mighty pose, all makes me get giddy with excitement. If it's a Wrestlemania, then I'm even more excited than before because I know I'm in for a treat.
And what about his theme song itself? It's just a super song that for some reason just fits him. His voice is perfect, not just for singing, but for cutting some awesome promos.
When he performs his crazy antics, especially while a part of DX, he has me laughing uncontrollably, whether he be advertising DX T-shirts, or if he's just acting goofy with Triple H. When he's on the mic, either I'm going to laugh, or I'm going to get caught in the moment listening to every single word that is spoken by his soothing voice. I can feel his emotions, I can feel the anger, sadness or pain in his voice.
When he's in the ring, I can never miss a single move. I can never feel bored. When he's tuning up the band, I can always feel that excitement. Every time he performs the 'Suck It' sign, I smile.
When he connects a Sweet Chin Music/Superkick on his opponent, I feel something that cannot be described in a way.
At the end of the match, I will have learnt another story. The story that was told in the ring.
Whatever storyline he's in, it feels like the main event. Whether it be DX vs. Legacy, or Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker, it's better than whatever is happening with the WWE Championship.
We all know that the DX/Legacy feud is the hottest thing right now right after CM Punk and The Undertaker.
He doesn't need a Championship involved in his storylines to make it work. If there's a Shawn Michaels match on the PPV card, then you know that there's a 95% chance that it's going to unofficially headline the show.
Every Wrestlemania he's in, he's stolen the show. Ever since Wrestlemania 19, all his matches have been nothing less than 4 stars. Even before then, he's given us 5 star matches at 'Mania.
Keep watching all his matches at 'Mania, and in the end, you'll be staring at your TV with awe. Even when you start expecting wonderful matches, you will still be awestruck. Somehow, he will top his last performance.
Backstage he knows what to do. How to build up better storylines, and how to help the younger talent. He isn't selfish. He's grown over his old problems including his drug addiction. He knew when to get help and quit.
"Shawn Michaels can make a broomstick look like a World Heavyweight Champion. Wait, that's what he did to me." -Batista
This tells us two things: 1) Batista knows he sucks. 2) Shawn can put over younger stars very well.
He can make jobbers seem like a real threat. He can make a mid-carder into a main-eventer. Where was Legacy before Shawn Michaels came back?
He's a nice person, always helps others, always puts others in front of him.
It's pretty obvious how much he loves the business. He loves it almost as much as his family. He keeps himself in shape all the time. He doesn't come to be a champion and to be noticed. He comes to have fun.
Be it a Wrestlemania, or a random house show, you will always be entertained when Shawn's in the ring. That deserves our respect alone.
It's been said time and time again, the day that Shawn retires will be a dark one.
I will not know him as the Greatest Superstar of all time, or the Greatest Wrestler of all time. I will know him as The Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels.
In the next generation, there may be another Headliner, Icon, Main Event, Showstopper, Show-Stealer or Mr. Wrestlemania. People have already started comparing John Morrison to Shawn Michaels.
But know this: There was, is and always will only be one Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels.
Isn't it funny how Shawn
Can get you drawn
To the TV while on the edge of your seat
And then cheering right out on your feet?
What's next? What are we going to see?
As he starts tuning up the band
Some Sweet Chin Music he did land
'Mania after 'Mania, match after match
A better one I never did catch
He's given us nothing but the best
And now in bed can I have a peaceful rest
His presence is but like a sun
The name of this one
Rings in the air like that of bells,
The Heartbreak Kid, Shawn Michaels
