Tom Herman Scores Big over Urban Meyer with Former Texas A&M QB Kyle Allen

Justin FergusonJan 5, 2016

Tom Herman just can't stop scoring.

Herman's Houston team scored 40 points per game in his first season as a college head coach—one that included an AAC title. The Cougars scored more points on Florida State than anyone else this season in a major Peach Bowl victory.

Herman personally scored a contract extension and raise worth an additional $1.45 million per year with the program.

So it should come as no surprise that Herman scored big again on Tuesday, beating former boss Urban Meyer in the process.

As first reported by Joseph Duarte of the Houston Chronicle, former Texas A&M starting quarterback Kyle Allen is transferring to Houston. Allen tweeted an encouraging message to Houston fans on Tuesday afternoon, and Houston confirmed the transfer from its official account:

According to 247Sports' Justin Hopkins, Houston beat out several programs across the country for Allen's services, including Nebraska, Oklahoma and—most notably—Ohio State.

Herman recruited Allen for Ohio State as Meyer's offensive coordinator, when the Arizona native was a 5-star prospect and the No. 10-ranked recruit in the country. When Allen decided to transfer from Texas A&M last month, the Buckeyes started recruiting him again, and he attended one of their Fiesta Bowl practices.

In a report on Jan. 2, Hopkins suggested that Ohio State and Houston were the top two schools in the race for the transferring Allen.

But now Allen is set to stay in Texas, where he'll sit out the 2016 season for Houston and be eligible again in 2017 as a redshirt junior.

Former Texas A&M QB Kyle Allen

Consider this the biggest win yet for Houston's future.

Allen's talent was evident at Texas A&M from his true freshman campaign in 2014. He took over Kenny Hill's job as starting quarterback in the second half of the season, going 3-2 as a starter with 13 touchdowns and just five interceptions.

He split starting time with true freshman Kyler Murray in 2015. Although the Texas A&M offense fell below its usual standards this past season, he still finished with 2,210 passing yards, 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Allen will arrive in Houston and have a full year to get accustomed to Herman's offensive system.

The Cougars already have a dark-horse Heisman Trophy contender at quarterback in touchdown machine Greg Ward Jr. and an established backup in Kyle Postma.

When Allen becomes eligible in 2016, he'll be expected to beat out Postma and any other contenders for the starting quarterback job.

He has starting experience at a high level and one of the strongest arms around. While he's nowhere near the running threat Ward is, Allen has great athleticism for a pocket-passing quarterback.

Allen will also be able to help get the most out of a growing group of wide receiver talent at Houston. Two of the Cougars' top receivers this season, Steven Dunbar and Linell Bonner, will still have eligibility left in 2017, and Houston currently has commitments from two 4-star receivers (Tyrie Cleveland and Courtney Lark).

Those blue-chip prospects are part of a stellar Houston recruiting class that is currently in the Top 25 of 247Sports' composite rankings.

That's rare air for a "Group of Five" program, and even if Houston doesn't close out the cycle in the Top 25, Herman and his staff just picked up a former 5-star for the roster.

Allen's transfer should make Houston a more appealing destinationespecially for offensive skill talentin the next couple of recruiting cycles.

ATLANTA, GA - DECEMBER 31: Head coach Tom Herman of the Houston Cougars celebrates alongside the trophy after their 38-24 win over the Florida State Seminoles during the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl at the Georgia Dome on December 31, 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia.

In addition to any recruiting momentum Allen's arrival may give Houston, the move should be a great sign for Herman's future for Cougars fans, as Bruce Feldman of FoxSports.com explained:

"

The news of Allen’s arrival at UH should give Cougar fans many reasons to smile. Among them: It provides (along with a new $3 million contract) for Tom Herman more reasons to stick around, since it’s a stretch to think the Cougars head coach could go anywhere in 2017 and inherit a more talented QB than Allen.

"

Herman was connected to almost every Power Five job opening from USC to South Carolina during the wild, silly season of November. He declined to make a move, stating that he wanted to build something special at Houston.

"If you want to win championships and you want to win New Year's Six bowl games and win 13 games and kiss trophies … you can certainly do it at one of the finest institutions in the country and … the greatest city in America," Herman said after the Cougars' Peach Bowl victory, per Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle.

Herman could very well leave for another program in the next few seasons if the right one comes calling.

But with the wins he's accumulated in the past year for Houston—including Allen's transfer—he has plenty of financial and competitive incentives to stay and keep the #HTownTakeover going strong.
