Derrick Henry Awarded 2015 Heisman Trophy: Voting Results, Comments, Reaction

Henry shined on a weekly basis while helping the Crimson Tide earn a 12-1 record and a berth in the College Football Playoff. His consistent impact for a national title contender helped him stand out in a year where nobody in the Heisman conversation pulled away from the pack.

The junior out of Florida averaged more than 150 yards per game on the ground for Alabama and scored at least one touchdown in every contest. Here's a look at how his numbers stack up to those of former Tide rusher Mark Ingram, who won the coveted award in 2009:

Perhaps Henry's biggest performance came in early November when Bama faced off against LSU and Heisman hopeful Leonard Fournette. He rushed for 210 yards and three touchdowns in a Tide victory while his counterpart was held to just 31 yards on 19 rushing attempts and a single score.

The triumph came in the midst of a 10-game winning streak that Alabama desperately needed following an early loss to Ole Miss. The powerful back played a vital role in just about every one of those games as the team fought back from the brink to earn a spot in the final four.

After the Tide edged Florida in the SEC Championship Game, Henry attempted to deflect attention away from himself and toward the team goals, as John Zenor of the Associated Press relayed.

"My main focus is on finishing and helping this team win," Henry said. "I'm going to do whatever it takes to help this team win. Whether it's me running the ball, catching the ball or pass blocking, I just want this team to win. It's a team effort."

Of course, much of Alabama's success so far wouldn't have been possible without him leading the offensive charge week in and week out.

The players Henry edged out had strong cases of their own, as well.

McCaffrey finished with a flurry as he racked up 312 total yards of offense and a pair of touchdowns as the Cardinal knocked off USC in the Pac-12 title game. The explosion gave the dynamic running back nearly 2,400 yards from scrimmage for the season, but he tallied just 12 offensive touchdowns.Ā

Watson set the tone for a Clemson squad that heads into the playoff with a 13-0 record. The quarterback finished with just over 4,400 yards of offense and 41 touchdowns. What he may have lacked in the eyes of the voters is a series of "Heisman moments," as the dominant Tigers were often on cruise control.

In the end, Henry had the ideal combination of terrific numbers, impact moments and strong team performance to earn him the recognition as the top player in college football this season.

His job is far from done, however. Alabama is going to need him to carry the load offensively as it gets ready to take on Michigan State in the semifinals. All signs point to a hard-hitting Cotton Bowl that should play right into Henry's strengths.

No matter how the Crimson Tide's season comes to a close, Henry will eventually be able to take pleasure in the fact he gets to stand alongside college football legends like Roger Staubach, Archie Griffin and Herschel Walker as a Heisman Trophy winner.
