I came across this forum and most of the people there think it was Ginobili's injury that caused him to ill-perform in the games. I completely disagree with most of them—I think Sasha is a great defender and a three point threat. I think he really shut down Ginobili, and distracted him so much with his pesky moves combined with his flops that he completely took Ginobili out of the game and did his job efficiently.

This popped a couple of questions in my mind: Is Sasha better than Ginobili? Is Ginobili overrated?

My answer to the first question is that Sasha is better than Ginobili.

Unlike Ginobili, Sasha has been consistent the whole season. He has been knocking down three pointers with more efficiency than any other player, and has also showed no hesitance in the playoffs, unlike the so-called best three point shooter—Jason Kapono.

Ginobili, on the other hand, has been in and out of the Spurs' play. He certainly has a better ability in driving to the basket, but he is not capable of putting such energy on the defensive end, and then coming back on offense to knock down shots as Sasha can.

Take a look at the Stats:

Sasha Vujacic
Los Angeles Lakers
Position: G
Height: 6-7 Weight: 205
From: Slovenia

2007-08 Statistics
PPG 8.8
RPG 2.1
APG 1.0
SPG 0.5
BPG 0.1
FG% 0.454
FT% 0.835
3P% 0.437
MPG 17.8
Manu Ginobili
San Antonio Spurs
Position: G
Height: 6-6 Weight: 205
From: Argentina

2007-08 Statistics
PPG 19.5
RPG 4.8
APG 4.5
SPG 1.5
BPG 0.4
FG% 0.460
FT% 0.860
3P% 0.401
MPG 31.0

Although the stats clearly go against my opinions, keep in mind that I am talking about the consistency, the improvement, the stamina, and the liability each team puts in them.

To answer the second question, I do think Ginobili is overrated.

Everyone calls him the soul of San Antonio Spurs, but he is prone to injuries, unreliable on defense, and inconsistent on offense.

Now, I am not saying this guy doesn't give his all and gets the job done, because he does, but that doesn't mean we should give him as much attention as we do. He is just another role player, one of the very best ones, but I wouldn't call him a leader.

  1. No way does Sasha Vujacic even hold Ginobili's luggage for him, dude! Ginobili will eat his food any day of the week and if you watch them play there is absolutely no comparison or argument to be made at all!!! Manu is a beast who can take over a game with his aggressiveness, ability and tenacity. Vujacic is pretty much a three-point shooter who camps out behind the line and gets most of his opportunities that way. Lets put it like this: put Ginobili with Kobe Bryant and here's your starting lineup:
    C- Pau Gasol
    PF- Andrew Bynum (when healthy)
    SF- Lamar Odom/Manu Ginobili
    SG- Kobe Bryant
    PG- Derek Fisher
Come on dude! Do you know what that team would do in the regular season? Can you say 70 wins? Now here's the Spurs lineup with Vujacic:
    C- Fabricio Oberto
    PF- Tim Duncan
    SF- Bruce Bowen
    SG- Michael Finley/Brent Barry/Ime Udoka
    PG- Tony Parker/Sasha Vujacic
That team wouldn't make the playoffs in the West! So when your comparing Manu to Boo-jacic, remember two things: Kobe Bryant and talent. Put Vujacic on those championship teams instead of Ginobili and you're talking about either the Suns or Pistons being champs, not the Spurs!
    Ginobili<<

  2. Rizwan my friend!!! Good try bro. Manu vs. Sasha? You gotta be kidding me. Don't get me wrong, I love sasha. I like to see him play, but comparing him to Manu? I think you're talking about another Emmanuel Ginobili or maybe another Sasha. MG is far more better than SV.

  3. Well I think what u said is true! Sasha Vujacic is better than Ginobili! The only reason why most people would say that Ginobili is better, is because he has had more experience in the league. When Sasha is in there for as many years as Ginobili has been, Sasha will be much better! He has a lot of potential!!!!!! =D

  4. no really guys... i think he is a btter player then at least stojokovich... right
and he shows us at least one drive to the basket each game, soon he'll develop his penetrating.... i am sure he'll work on it in the summer

  5. there's no comparison between Ginobili and Vujacic, Vujacic is a roll player at best and Ginobili's a superstar. Don't knock Jason Kapono, did you even watch a raptor playoff game? He averaged over 15 points a game in the playoffs while only averaging 7 ppg during the regular season...how is that hesitation? the least you could do is look up the stats before you state an irrelevant comment like that. Your article is about Vujacic being better than Ginobili-which is ridiculous, by the way-there is no reason to bring Kapono into the story especially with an untrue statement. Get your facts straight before you write your next article. And you need to layoff the crack if you honestly think Vujacic is better than Ginobili.

  6. It may be best to look at their total bodies of work. Manu has consistently been an elite player on every level he has played both in the NBA and internationally. Manu has been a key player in both NBA championships as well as integral part of the Olympic gold medal team. Sasha, not so much. I don't think it is fair to either player to compare them based on this one series as many have already stated that Manu was injured. His severe ankle injury really hurt his first step.

I think Sasha has improved his game but he is not a game changing player, Manu not only changes games he changes entire series. Sorry but your comparison of the two players is completely off the mark. Not sure where you get the comparison Stojokovich either?

Let's talk about Sasha in a few years.....

  7. Ur joking right. manu is in a different league then sasha...sasha will never be as good as Manu
    Manu:
    MVP Euroleuge
    MVP Italian league
    MVP 2004 olympic games
    Former nba All star
3 nba championships all in which he was a major part of
    Olympic gold medalist
    Sixth man of the year
    all nba 3rd team
the guy has won championships for every team hes played for.. he just gets the job done

    Sasha Vujaci ?

  8. All the pro-manu fans are right, sasha is no where near as great a player as manu is. I won't reiterate what the manu fans have said but the only reason why sasha was able to bother manu was because of the ankle injury. I know it's been said the ankle wasn't an issue but if you've never had an ankle injury then u don't know how hard it is to play on a bad ankle. It changes the way u play considerably. Hell even kobe has admitted ginobili is his favorite player to watch.
