Charlie Whitehurst to Colts: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction
The Indianapolis Colts plugged their hole at backup quarterback Thursday, claiming former Tennessee Titans signal-caller Charlie Whitehurst off waivers, per the team.
The Titans released Whitehurst on Wednesday to make room for running back David Cobb, who returned to the active roster after missing the first nine weeks with a calf injury. Whitehurst, 33, joined Tennessee in 2014 after a two-year stint with the Chargers in San Diego. He posted career highs in passing yards (1,326) and touchdowns (seven) while appearing in seven games last season.
Overall, the 2006 third-round pick has played in 20 games in his decadelong NFL career. He'll take over as the primary backup for Matt Hasselbeck, who will be replacing an injured Andrew Luck. Hasselbeck at age 40 isn't the most sturdy option, so it's possible Whitehurst will wind up seeing some on-field action if the veteran is ineffective or gets injured.

Luck is expected to miss two to six weeks with a lacerated kidney. Given the severity of the injury, it's much more likely Luck returns in the latter half of that time frame. As it stands, the Colts will be relying on two quarterbacks who have made all of seven starts in the last three seasons.
