Mayweather vs Pacquiao became one step closer to reality yesterday as Floyd Mayweather Jr comprehensively out-boxed and out-classed his lion-hearted Mexican opponent, Juan Manuel Marquez. Mayweather showed absolutely no signs of ring-rust despite a nearly two year layoff and disposed of the man currently rated number two on the mythical pound-for-pound list with some ease.

Floyd Jr's victory also had the effect of emboldening his father, the self-confessed poet laureate of boxing Floyd Mayweather Sr, who took the opportunity to deliver a speech entitled, "No fair to compare."

There are no prizes for guessing who he was referring to in his spiel. He went on to proclaim that Pacquiao, "shouldn't want any of lil' Floyd," that Pacquiao had, "no skills," and that Pacuqiao would be, "put in his place."

Obviously, a lot of Pacquiao fans dislike Floyd Mayweather Sr. It's not hard to see why. They feel as though he has done nothing but disrespect Pacquiao and doesn't give him any credit whatsoever. When one views Mayweather Sr's tirade against his latest allegations that Pacquiao was taking "supplements," it's not hard too see why fans of the Pac Man feel as such.

However, I believe that the build-up to Mayweather-Pacquiao began the day Pacquiao knocked Hatton out. We all know that if the fight were to happen, it would be one of the biggest fights of all time. This would be in large part due to Mayweather Sr and his "potty mouth."

If there's one thing that Professional Wrestling has taught us, it is that the viewing public is happy to pay good money to see opinionated fighters they dislike lose. When you pit a popular fighter against an unpopular fighter, that is when inevitably, most of your big fights happen.

This principle has been applied to good effect by Muhammad Ali, Hulk Hogan and of course "Money" Mayweather himself.

The Mayweathers know they cannot be the good guy. Manny is as nice a man as they come. He's dedicated, hard-working, humble and appreciative of everything he has. As such, Team Mayweather knows that they have to enrage the viewing public, particularly the Pac Fans.

I don't buy for a second that Mayweather Sr actually believes Manny to be on steroids or that he has "no skills." One does not become a champion in six-different weight classes without having skills.

Simply put? It's all a wind-up from Team Mayweather. Believe me when I say this, you haven't heard the end of it by a long-shot. You can already see Leonard Ellerbe licking his lips at the prospect of another potential 2.5 million PPV buys against Pacquiao.

My advice to Pacquiao fans and Team Pacquiao? Laugh it all off. These things are only said to provoke a reaction, get a rise and generate interest.

It would seem for now, that Team Pacquiao is failing in this respect, dismally. And that, ladies and gentleman is, "the truest quote that i ever wrote!"
