England vs. USA at Wembley Stadium: a Shock in the Cards?
Tonight sees England take on USA at Wembley in Fabio Capello's third game in charge of the national team.
Ahead of this game, he has said that he wants the England players to perform. This will come as music to the ears of every England fan.
When England gets so boring that you don't want to watch them anymore, you have a problem. It has gotten to that point for me, but I will still watch tonight's game to see if they can perform against a lesser side.
However, I don't have particularly high hopes.
I have no doubt that, eventually, Capello will get England playing good football and winning matches. But in these friendlies, where he could well experiment, I don't see too much excitement happening.
That is, unless USA causes the excitement. And they could very well do it.
They are a fast improving side, with a number of players who have played in the EPL. Their 'keeper Tim Howard plays against the best nearly every week.
So this is going to be no walk in the park for the boys in white. Where it may look like they're not performing, it could just be that USA is making it hard for them.
Meanwhile, David Beckham will be presented with a golden cap to mark his 100 appearances for England. And on a day when he may make his 101st cap, his LA Galaxy teammate Landon Donovan looks set to reach the century himself.
And what an achievement it would be. One hundred caps, with his 100th at Wembley—one of the best stadiums in the world. And he's still only 26.
Considering he only made his debut in late 2000, he would've made those 100 caps in seven-and-a-half years.
As well as 99 caps, Donovan also has 35 goals and 23 assists, making him USA's highest ever assist maker. He has been a wonderful servant to his country and deserves his century of caps.
Also, Capello revealed that John Terry will begin the long road to recovery after his nightmare in Moscow by captaining his country once more.
I don't think what happened in Moscow had any effect on Capello's decision. I believe he was planning to have Terry as captain in this game all along.
And after tonight, he would've been able to have a look at his front-runners for the England captaincy. He may choose yet another captain for the match against Trinidad and Tobago, with names such as Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney being mentioned.
Personally, I think he has already seen the two that should be the ones battling it out for the armband—Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand.
I'm not yet decided on who I want. My heart says Gerrard but my head says Ferdinand. We'll just have to wait and see what Capello says.
Back to tonight's game—I'm going to predict one of two things happening. It will either be a dull game, with USA ending up winning, or an increasingly rare great performance from England, blowing USA out of the water and back across the pond.
