Latest on Decker's Recovery Timeline After Shoulder Surgery

Tuesday, Nov. 15

ESPN.com's Rich Cimini reported on Tuesday that Decker "is having surgery [Tuesday] to repair a torn rotator cuff. This was expected. The recovery will be eight months, according to the team. That takes him to mid-July, shortly before the start of training camp, if all goes well in his rehab. Decker said recently he doesn't expect to miss any regular-season action in 2017."

Jessie James Decker shared a photo of her husband prior to surgery on Tuesday:

"It's probably too early for that," head coach Todd Bowles said when asked about Decker being ready for 2017, per Ralph Vacchiano of SNY. "It'll probably be close."

Decker said he expects the injury rehab to be six to eight months, adding, "It's not a fun time, but obviously it's something that needs to be done to continue my career," per Cimini.

Decker Was Safety Valve in Passing Game

The Jets don't normally boast a potent offensive attack, but Decker has turned out to be a crucial weapon for Bowles. He finished second on the team in receptions, yards and touchdowns last year, trailing Brandon Marshall in all three categories.

Injuries hampered Decker briefly last season, as he was inactive for Week 3's game against the Philadelphia Eagles because of a strained PCL in his left knee. But that was the only game he missed in 2015.

Marshall's presence makes the loss of Decker easier to take. As good as that duo was last year, no other wide receiver on the roster had more than 22 catches and 315 yards.

Decker is a great safety net because of his size and strength, especially in the red zone, so his absence leaves a huge hole that no backup can fill.
