Houston Texans vs. Jacksonville Jaguars: What's the Game Plan for Jacksonville?

Evan ReierOct 17, 2015

The Jacksonville Jaguars finally return to EverBank Field for their Week 6 matchup with the Houston Texans. After three straight road games and three straight losses, the Jaguars will look to get back on track in Jacksonville.

Both squads are 1-4 heading into this game, and while neither team will turn the entire season around with a win on Sunday, getting to 2-4 and securing an AFC South win would be a big step forward toward that goal.

If the Jaguars want to beat the Texans, they will have to dig deeper than planning and tactics. They have to put together a complete performance and mature past their errors and mistakes from the first five weeks.

There have been numerous positives and chances for the Jaguars, but now it's time to fully take advantage of them. The schedule only gets tougher from this point on, so earning a win on Sunday will be crucial.

Offensive Game Plan

With quarterback Blake Bortles on pace for 30-plus touchdowns this season, as seen below, and running back T.J. Yeldon currently questionable on the Jaguars' injury report, the plan may be a little bit more pass-oriented than normal.

Bortles had the best game of his NFL career last week, throwing for 303 yards and four touchdowns. While it's still apparent he isn't quite ready to carry the offense, he's certainly got the talent to perform well at the QB position.

Of course the Jaguars will need to establish the run, but their current strength is Bortles and the pass. Wide receivers Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns are playing incredibly well.

If Yeldon can't go or will be limited on Sunday, the Jaguars can breathe a sigh of relief that running back Denard Robinson is practicing in full and will likely be available this Sunday. His MCL tweak has kept him off the field, which took away a valuable alternative to Yeldon in the run game.

However, if the Jaguars can't block Texans defensive tackle J.J. Watt and their front, it will be hard to get any of the offense going. The Texans will be without defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, as reported by Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, but it will still be a battle in the trenches for the offensive line.

Defensive Game Plan

The Jaguars will go into Sunday's game with the two most important players on the defense in linebacker Paul Posluszny and defensive tackle Sen'Derrick Marks. The two players' play and leadership has been vital to defensive success, and having them both back will be a big boost.

The defense is coming off a day where it allowed 38 points, although it was certainly put into tough spots by the offense and special teams. Thirty-eight points is still 38 points, though, and the Jags will need to bounce back against a struggling Texans offense, which is 26th in the NFL in scoring average with 19.4 points per game.

Texans QB Brian Hoyer is experienced and won't likely make a lot of mistakes, so it will be imperative to get pressure on him as often as possible. Besides wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, the Texans aren't especially explosive in the pass, so bringing blitzes more frequently is a legitimate option.

The Jaguars got roasted by Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin on multiple occasions, and if they aren't careful, it could happen with Texans running back Arian Foster as well. Foster is still a very dangerous back, and he'll likely be the No. 1 priority for the Jaguars defense.

The Texans don't have a fantastic offense, but the Jaguars made a mediocre-at-best Buccaneers offense look explosive. The defense has done relatively well this season, and it's now time it buckles down and proves that last week was an exception.

It's the third consecutive week the Jaguars are playing an opponent with the same record, and it's another game the Jaguars should win. The Jags have had a series of winnable games, but they haven't been able to capitalize.

It's put them in a hole in the AFC South and has turned the pressure on for the rest of the season. The playoffs are likely out of the picture, but if the Jaguars want to continue in the same regime, they have to start winning.

The noticeable pressure building can be eased with a win on Sunday, especially an emphatic one at that. Winning comfortably could be a confidence booster, and considering the improving situation, the Jaguars could springboard into the remaining 10 games after this Sunday.
