Waiters to Be Re-Evaluated in 2 Weeks
Wednesday, Nov. 30
Waiters' offseason was a microcosm of his NBA career. He declined to sign the Oklahoma City Thunder's $6.8 million offer sheet before the team ultimately pulled it in mid-July.
Presumably, Waiters thought he was deserving of a more lucrative long-term deal. Instead, he signed a two-year deal with the Heat worth less than $6 million.
This is a pivotal year for the 24-year-old. With the salary cap likely to rise again next year, Waiters could prove to be worthy of the multiyear contract he desired this past summer. Missing time with an injury won't help him achieve that pursuit, however.
Waiters started 16 of Miami's first 17 games before Wednesday's announcement. He's averaging 14.2 points and a career-high 4.0 assists per game. His field-goal percentage, however, is a career-low 38.4 percent.
Head coach Erik Spoelstra will likely turn to Rodney McGruder at shooting guard, while Tyler Johnson might move over from point guard to play at the 2 for stretches.
With the 5-12 Heat sitting three-and-a-half games behind the eighth-seeded Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference, losing a starter won't help the team climb back into a playoff position.
