Andre Schurrle Mistaken for Professional Gamer on German TV Show
Wolfsburg forward Andre Schurrle occasionally does promotional work for the Call of Duty series, which may be why he found himself on the couch of a German computer games show on the brilliantly named Rocket Beans network.
However, Sofia Kats, the presenter of the show, had absolutely no idea that a World Cup winner was sitting next to her. Reading from a Wikipedia print-out—like all good journalists do—Kats went under the assumption that Schurrle was actually a pro gamer named Christian Chmiel.
Rather than correct the error, Schurrle appeared to channel his inner Don Draper and went along with the lie, thus assuming the gamer's identity.
The interviewer asks why he is speaking German when her fact sheet claims he is English, to which the former Chelsea star simply says that his mother is German and his father is English—which is not true.
After batting away a few esoteric gamer questions while struggling to contain his laughter, Schurrle finally breaks the ruse at the two-minute mark. "I think we have to make something clear," he says while pointing at her print-out. "This is not me."
After a few more awkward exchanges, the interviewer overcomes her embarrassment and asks who she is actually speaking to. "I am a footballer. For the German national team. Andre Schurrle," he says.
The presenter then admits she knows nothing about football and proceeds to fumble through a few more questions before offering her final "easy" question:
"Sofia Kats: "Who do you think will win the next championship?"
Andre Schurrle: [Stares blankly.]
SK: "In football."
AS: "Oh, in football. It would be nice if we win it, but it is not easy."
SK: "Which team do you play for?"
AS: "Wolfsburg."
"
And there ended one of the strangest interviews a World Cup winner is ever likely to participate in.
