Lewis Hamilton Wins a Monaco Grand Prix for the Ages
Lewis Hamilton had won in every racing series that he had raced at Monaco except for Formula 1āwhere he finished second in his first try last year. The argument can be made that he should have won last year too, but team orders prevented him from passing teammate Fernando Alonso.
This year, after one of the best races I have seen in years, Hamilton ended up on top.
Was his race perfect? Far from it. Early in the race he hit the wall, which gave the young British superstar a flat and put him towards the back of the field. He was saved by the safety car when David Coulthard and Sebastian Bourdais crashed on lap 7.
That let Hamilton catch the field and make it back to the front.
This year's Monaco GP was as eventful and exciting as ever. First was the weather. At the start of the race it was raining lightly and teams did not know what tire to use. They all ended up using intermediate tires, which worked out for the most part. Not long into the race the rain came harder and there were more crashes and more passes.
As the rain stopped young Robert Kubica found himself in the lead ahead of Felipe Massa of Ferrari. They set blistering pace-setting fast laps over and over.
Another big surprise in the race was Adrian Sutil of Force-India Ferrari. Neither of the drivers on the team have scored a point yet this season, but he found himself running in the top five late in the race, battling the two Team Ferrari cars and keeping pace with them.
Unfortunately, today was not Sutil's day, as Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen lost control and rear-ended Sutil, ending his amazing run at Monaco. It was hard to watch as he got out of his wrecked machine with his head hung low.
I can't even imagine how he would have felt after driving such a brilliant race just to get taken out with only nine laps to go.
Sutil's performance, as well as the performance of a lot of other drivers, made this year's Monaco Grand Prix one of the best Formula 1 races that I have seen in years.
