Fernando Torres Not for Sale, but Is Cristiano Ronaldo?

Barney CorkhillMay 27, 2008

Two of the EPL's top stars have been involved in the inevitable transfer talk in the last two days.

Admittedly, Cristiano Ronaldo is never out of the newspapers at the moment with the Madrid talk. And he does give the press fuel for this talk, constantly giving inconclusive hints about his future.

Whether this is a game he's playing or not, the media are lapping it up.

He constantly undermines the repeated statements from Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill that Ronaldo will be going nowhere. I can't help but think that if any other player did this, Fergie would've gotten fed up with them by now, and shown them the door.

He has never had a problem shipping big name players from Old Trafford (the likes of Jaap Stam, Peter Schmeichel, David Beckham, Roy Keane and Ruud van Nistelrooy show that), but I wonder—is Ronaldo just too good for Ferguson to do this to?

Have Man Utd found a player that can dictate his own terms, as the club needs him more than he needs the club?

If Ronaldo really wanted to, he could comfortably squeeze out the most lucrative contract of all-time, be it in Manchester or Madrid.

I was 100 percent certain that Ronaldo would stay at United this summer. Until this morning.

I heard of news that a transfer bid had been made from Madrid for Ronaldo for a staggering £150 million. That's £150,000,000! Over three times the current transfer record, also broken by Madrid in paying for Zinedine Zidane—a player better than Ronaldo is!

A few weeks ago I wrote an article about how an £80 million bid for Messi was insane. Well, ladies and gentlemen, we've found a new meaning of the word insane.

Of course, it won't all be in cash. Included in that £150m bid is £50m cash, three top players (two of which are Robinho and Sergio Ramos), and Ronaldo would receive a £50m contract.

All that for one man? He's good, but no one's that good. If I was David Gill I would snap Madrid's hand off for that offer. They bought him for something like £12 million, have got three decent, one good, and one great season out of him, and now would be making almost an £140m profit.

That's good business if ever I heard it!

Meanwhile, Chelsea have been sizing up Fernando Torres as a potential replacement for the outward-bound Didier Drogba.

Torres is reportedly at the top of their wish-list, with a price tag of £50m on him. First things first, you're going to have to do a lot better than that Roman.

Torres has become the new "god" at Anfield, the latest in a long line of Liverpool greats up front. If we sell him, there will be uproar. The man seen as our ticket to the title being shipped out will be nearly as bad as saying that we're looking to finish fifth next season.

Secondly, how on earth Ronaldo's valued at £150m and Torres at £50m I'll never know. Ronaldo is better than Torres admittedly, but not that much better. In my book, Torres is probably worth £30-£35 million now, whereas Ronaldo is worth £40 million.

However, what with rumours of the financial state of our owners flying about, I just hope they don't give in and sell "El Nino."

In fact, doing that will be their fast track to even more hatred from the fans. If they want to make sure they're hated in the red side of Merseyside, that would be second only to selling Gerrard and Carragher.

Torres is not for sale!
