Chelsea To Launch a 50M bid For Liverpool's Fernando Torres?
Rafa Benitez is the latest person from Anfield to tell Chelsea that Fernando Torres is not for sale regardless of how much money is offered.
Torres enjoyed a superb debut season at Anfield and it is suggested that Chelsea could be planning to make a £50 million bid for the Liverpool striker this summer.
As far as I know, Chelsea haven't made a bid yet so I have no idea why Liverpool keep complaining about Chelsea "unsettling their players."
Especially when Liverpool themselves have been going after players on teams that are below them in the standings. Benitez puts in two laughable offers for Gareth Barry of Aston Villa and Newcastle’s James Milner. However, once rumors of a 50M bid for Torres appear (twice his value), the toys come out the box.
Do I want to see Torres at Stamford Bridge? Not particularly. Not because of his ability, as he has amazing ability and is, in my view, the Premier League's top striker.
First, If Chelsea launched a bid for Torres it would be a complete a lack of respect towards a fellow top team. (Not that I believe Chelsea management know anything about respect and dignity but this is surely one step too far).
Secondly, Torres would lose all of his credibility and respect if he did choose to make the move to West London. Whether his decision had anything to do with money or not, that’s what he'll have thrown in his face everyday for the rest of his career in England.
Chelsea of course won't need to do anything extra-ordinary to lose anybody's respect because in fact, they've already done that.
Benitez said today: "The situation is very simple—we do not want to sell Fernando Torres."
"If a player does a good job for his team, like Fernando has for us, then it is sometimes easy for people to speculate that he might be wanted by other clubs.
We are trying to add to the spine of our team and that means keeping players like Fernando, Javier Mascherano, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher."
Funny he'd say that, because that’s exactly what Aston Villa are trying to do, but that didn't stop Benitez putting in two bids for their star player.
In the end, if Torres does join Chelsea, Liverpool would be crippled, and Chelsea would be would be damn near unstoppable.
Chelsea's flaw last season was goal scoring and he would definitely put an end to that problem.
