Sad? Yes, Nevertheless True

"I thought it was very sad. In fact I thought it was disgusting.”

A quote from the diatribe by Nick Dougherty, an up and coming star in British golf, on the comments by Peter Alliss during The BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth last week.

During the first two days play, the course was well short of its normal pristine condition.  The fairways were hard and bumpy.  The greens, especially those, newly laid, were almost bare in places. 

Consequently, the competitors were playing in conditions far from those they encounter normally.

Some failed abysmally to adapt their games accordingly and Peter Alliss, quite rightly, made criticism of the course and the players.

Fledglings, such as Dougherty find it difficult to adapt because of they have lived a pampered existence in professional golf, unlike their predecessors, who were taught in a much harder school.

Instead of vilifying old pros, such as Alliss, Dougherty would enhance his career by seeking assistance from them, thus improving his chances of combating any kind of condition he may face in the future.

It must be said not all the competitors failed during the first two days, for example Paul McGinley shot rounds of 65 & 66.

Why? 

Simply because he used his head and played the course and the conditions that applied.

Peter Alliss also complained on the length of time modern players take to play 18 holes, well justified when some were approaching five hours, which is simply ridiculous.

Golf needs the Peter Alliss' of this world and long may he continue to give his honest and unbiased opinions of the modern game.
