Peja Stojakovic Reportedly Offered Sacramento Kings Front-Office Position
Months after the Sacramento Kings named former center Vlade Divac vice president of basketball operations, the team is reportedly on the verge of adding another household name to its front office.ย
According to ESPN.com's Marc Stein, the Kings have extended a full-time offer to Peja Stojakovic for a gig that would have him work alongside Divac in a player personnel role.ย
"I asked him to join me and in September weโll probably know," Divac said, according to theย Sacramento Bee's Jason Jones.ย
Stein added that Stojakovic accompanied Divac to theย Las Vegas Summer League. And asย Jones noted, the offer may be more of a formality than anything considering the role Stojakovic has played over the past month:ย
Stojakovic was a three-time All-Star during his time with the Kings and finished his 13-year career with per-game averages of 17 points and 4.7 rebounds while shooting 40.1 percent from three-point range. ย
Divac,ย who has rapidly emerged as the face of the Kings front office, will hope his former teammate can help lead the team into a prosperous new era.ย
Since being appointed to his new role, Divac has been tasked with playing mediator during a period of tension between head coach George Karl and center DeMarcus Cousins.ย
"I will be honest with you, I think it's not pretty right now," Divac said of Cousins and Karl during a July 9 appearance on theย Jim Rome Show. "I'm focused on bringing a better team this year, and I think I did a pretty good job in this free agency, and now I will be focused on the two of them. I think they should think about how they can do the best for this team, and I hope everything goes well."
While the playoffs may still be a pipe dream for the Kings, they have the pieces to improve on last season's 29-win campaign during which former head coaches Mike Malone and Ty Corbin were fired before Karl came on board.ย
The Kings haven't won more than 29 games since the 2007-08 season, but a core of Cousins, Rudy Gay, Rajon Rondo and rookie Willie Cauley-Stein should help them make strides when the 2015-16 season gets underway. ย ย
