Boxer Wins Bronze at Pan Am Games, Declares Himself the 'Taylor Swift of Boxing'
Heavyweight boxer Cam F. Awesome lost a fight on Thursday night.
After a promising start to his semifinal bout against Lenier Pero at the Toronto Pam Am Games, Awesome (born Lenroy Thompson) lost by decision to the Cuban fighter.
This left Awesome with a bronze medal and some pop culture revelations to get off his chest during his post-fight interview with ESPN.
Deadspin's Timothy Burke caught wind of the interview.
Awesome told ESPN he thought he had won the fight. He was not bragging, but he wanted it to be known: He is to fistic excellence what a certain pop country star is to the music industry.
"I thought I looked amazing, and I thought I won the first round. ... The second round came, I was like, "Oh, OK. I won that round, as well. Cam, keep up the good work. You truly looking amazing. Some people say you're the Taylor Swift of boxing." I'm not saying I'm the Taylor Swift of boxing, but I'm not not saying I'm the Taylor Swift of boxing.
"
Then Cam waxed eloquence on how he believed he had helped democracy to another victory over socialism that night.
"But after the fight I was like, "Oh, Cam. Freedom beat communism." And then they announced the other corner. Uh, rojo, as they will say in Espanol. Which is not ESPN Deportes, but for the bilingual viewers I feel like they can appreciate that.
"
Awesome ultimately accepted his defeat but said he appreciates everyone who follows him and cheers for him on Facebook.
Here's a clip of Awesome going to work on Pero during the fight.
Now compare this with Taylor Swift deboning some stunt people.
I'm not saying they're both sublimely devastating forces of nature. But I'm not not saying they're both sublimely devastating forces of nature.
