Gordon Recovering from Surgery
Friday, July 17
The Orlando Sentinel's Josh Robbins broke the news Friday that Gordon underwent surgery Tuesday for a fractured jaw:
Team spokesman Joel Glass told Robbins that Gordon broke his jaw while "horsing around" with his brother and fellow NBA player Drew Gordon, who played for the Philadelphia 76ers last season.
His brother took to Twitter to apologize, writing, "I am deeply saddened and sorry for hurting my brother. I love him and my family more than anything."
Glass also stated that Gordon should be ready to go for the start of the regular season.
The power forward played in 47 games as a rookie last season, as he missed a large chunk of the campaign due to a fractured foot he suffered in November. In those 47 contests, he averaged 5.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. The former No. 4 overall pick has been coming along quite well in the NBA Summer League this year, averaging 21.7 points and 11.7 boards over three games, per NBA.com.
One of Orlando's most versatile players, Gordon will be needed to help develop a young roster that includes Victor Oladipo, Elfrid Payton and Nikola Vucevic. If his offense continues to improve, his game can help a core that has the potential to become a dangerously good team.
The Magic will look to put a 2014-15 season in which they went 25-57 in the rearview mirror—a campaign that saw them finish with a record that was better than only the New York Knicks and 76ers in the Eastern Conference. Having Gordon back and healthy for an entire season would certainly help Orlando accomplish that.
