Undertaker Appears at 2015 WWE Battleground to Confront Brock Lesnar

Joseph ZuckerJul 19, 2015

Over the years, The Undertaker has essentially been a WrestleMania exclusive for WWE fans. That changed Sunday when the "Deadman" appeared at the WWE Battleground pay-per-view in St. Louis.

He interfered in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship match between Brock Lesnar and Seth Rollins after Lesnar delivered an F-5 to Rollins and appeared to have the bout won, per WWE:

Undertaker proceeded to deliver a chokeslam and numerous Tombstone Piledrivers to Lesnar before leaving "The Beast" beaten and broken in the middle of the ring, surely setting the stage for a match between the two at SummerSlam:

WWE's Kyle Edwards pities the poor inhabitants of "Suplex City":

Seeing The Undertaker in a WWE ring during this time of year feels a bit weird now. File this under the "It's been how long!?" category; his last appearance in any form at SummerSlam was back in 2009, when he attacked CM Punk following Punk's World Heavyweight Championship victory over Jeff Hardy:

The Undertaker's last SummerSlam match was in 2008. He beat Edge in Hell in a Cell to wrap up that prolonged feud.

Some fans likely had Sunday's surprise spoiled, however, after hearing on Wrestling Observer Radio (via Matt Boone of SEScoops) that WWE planned to use The Undertaker on the summer's biggest pay-per-view. Still, Internet rumors can't dampen the excitement of hearing that ominous bell to signal his arrival for the first time in months.

Of course, one of the concerns with The Undertaker is his physical health. After looking completely past it in his defeat to Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 30, he returned to beat Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania 31 and appeared much closer to his physical peak.

Joe DeFranco, a physical trainer who worked with Triple H in the past, allayed any remaining fears after he snapped this photo of the 50-year-old hitting the weights:

The days of The Undertaker putting on classic technical masterpieces are likely gone, but that won't ruin the enjoyment of seeing him wrestling again. And he didn't seem to have any problem taking Lesnar out at Battleground.

Really, who doesn't want to see The Undertaker obtain a measure of revenge against Lesnar after Lesnar broke his WrestleMania streak? It's always nice when WWE calls back something that happened more than a few months ago between two Superstars.

Having Lesnar and Undertaker battle also makes perfect sense in the grand scheme of things because 'Taker is one of the few guys who can reasonably beat Lesnar. It also gives "The Beast" a major program for SummerSlam while keeping him out of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship picture.
