Lakers Rumors: Examining Latest Nick Young Trade Gossip and More
The Los Angeles Lakers' offseason didn't exactly begin according to plan. The team set its sights on several big-ticket free agents and pretty much whiffed on every single one of them. Things certainly appeared bleak for a team coming off a 21-win season, but lately, we've begun to see some light at the end of the tunnel.
In a dramatic turn of events, the Lakers traded for Roy Hibbert, signed veterans Lou Williams and Brandon Bass, as well as rookies D'Angelo Russell, Anthony Brown and Larry Nance Jr. All of a sudden, the team's roster began to accumulate something that had been missing for several previous seasonsโdepth.

Despite those signings, the Lakers aren't done yet.
General manager Mitch Kupchak is still looking to make moves, and not all of them are to bring players to Los Angeles. According to a report from Marc J. Spears and Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, the team had previously been attempting to offload a few players in a cap-saving move:
"The Lakers are exploring trades for Young,ย Ryan Kellyย andย Robert Sacre. Sacre and/or Kelly are possibilities to go to Pacers, sources said."
Neither Sacre or Kelly went to the Indiana Pacers, as the team acquired a second-round pick for Hibbert. As for Young, there was a rumor floating around that he would be packaged with Jordan Hill in a trade to the Chicago Bulls, but a tweet from Ryan Ward of LakersNation.com shot that theory down:
Since then, Hill was plucked by the Pacers and nothing has come to fruition on the Young front. According to a new development, Young may not be going anywhere any time soon. Take a glance at this interesting tweet from Mike Bresnahan of theย Los Angeles Times:
That is certainly something to keep an eye on, as Young's contract is worth $5.2 million this seasonโa big number for a team that is already over the cap limit, and a player who produced an inconsistent 2014-15 season.
The Lakers are still in search for a backup big man in the center of their frontcourt, and one rumor that continues to float around is a potential trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers for Brendan Haywood. Sam Amico of Fox Sports tweeted a list of the center's potential suitors:
Haywood doesn't produce much on the offensive end of the court, but he's a solid rebounder and rim-protector. Los Angeles needs a player with those attributes, which is why it has expressed interest in getting a deal done for the veteran.
The biggest roadblock here is Haywood's massive $10.5 million salary for this season. Although, there is a way around it. Haywood's salary isn't guaranteed, so if the Lakers acquired the center, they could waive him and re-sign him at a much cheaper price. Los Angeles may be over the cap, but Eric Pincus of Basketball Insiders tweeted one way the team could still acquire more talent:
If things don't work out for a Haywood trade, the Lakers could still fall back on Kevin Seraphin. Michael Scotto of Sheridan Hoops tweeted the team's interest in the center:
Seraphin isn't as big as the 7'0" Haywood, but he still stands at 6'10" and can contribute in the paint on the offensive end of the court. The 25-year-old made 79 appearances off the bench for the Washington Wizards last season, averaging 6.6 points and 3.6 rebounds while shooting 51.3 percent from the floor in 15.6 minutes per game.
