Week One of the NFL regular season is upon us, and with that I am kicking off the weekly regular season edition of Ziza Sounding Off, an article that was prescribed to me by my anger management counselors, Bruno Boys Cavigs and Bruno Boys Whooley.

Each week I will be nailing the more important concerning issues around the NFL and analyzing the impact that the news should have on the fantasy football world the only way I know how—Bruno Boys Ziza style.

If you enjoy sarcasm coupled with informative information, this is for you. If you don’t, oh well. I could care less! This is part of my therapy; blame Whooley and Cavigs, not me. Now on to this week’s fantasy football impact news.

Fantasy Football Impact News

News: San Diego Chargers star OLB Shawne Merriman was taken into custody on Sept. 6 by the San Diego Sherriff’s Department for giving his lady friend Tila Nguyen, better known as “Tila Tequilla,” a reach-around.

Ziza Sounding Off: Ladies and gentleman, this wasn’t a good reach-around. This physical contact was reported as Merriman trying to restrain Nguyen against her wishes. While it has been a complete war of "he said, she said" throughout the press, as well as Twitter, Merriman insists that he was trying to prevent Nguyen from driving as she had looked intoxicated.

There is no gray area here, people; at least when it comes to what the law will find.  Either he is guilty or he isn’t. He is either a total piece of crap or an outstanding citizen.

Either way, the good news is that there were no injuries reported after a medical examination. The bad news is San Diego D/ST owners, myself included, are very interested in seeing if this could make or break what is expected to be a solid fantasy football defense this year.

No charges have been filed against him for the time being, so react to the Chargers Week One matchup against the Oakland Raiders with glee. If he is found guilty, though, Merriman deserves the reach-around.

News: Denver Broncos star WR Brandon Marshall has had his suspension lifted and, according to rookie coach Josh McDaniels, Marshall has held his head high and has been cooperative in practice.

Ziza Sounding Off: Way to go there, big boy. While getting paid handsomely, Marshall has cooperated with his coaches. Isn’t that the way it is supposed to be? I am not sure about what the Bruno Boys Nation gets paid on average, but I personally don’t make seven figures, and I definitely don’t get to play the game that I love.

With that being said, I did draft Brandon Marshall in the Bruno Boys Staff Draft as my WR2 in the fifth round. At the time I was hoping for some good value and at the worst Marshall performing as a lower-end WR2 would lessen the blow.

The gamble seems to be paying off, though, as the more Marshall cooperates, the stronger my team is. While in real life I think players like Marshall are nothing more than idiots with a huge head, in the fantasy football world I am pulling for him with everything that I have. If he suits up, you have to play him.

News: According to the Dallas Morning News, Dallas Cowboys coach Wade Phillips expects an equal split of playing time between running backs Marion Barber and Felix Jones.

Ziza Sounding Off: While this can be taken as bad news by those that don’t think deeply, I take it as a opportunity to grab two running backs that will both have a solid impact this fantasy football season, as their value probably won’t be any lower than it will be after this announcement.

Barber is a solid RB2 and Jones is a very solid RB3. Don’t be scared off from drafting these two as they have a shot at both producing their best NFL season to date. If this news does affect your sleep pattern, though, rest assured that there are amateur leagues everywhere that don’t charge a dime to play.

Sound-Off Roundup

So what did everyone reading this article learn leading into Week One of the 2009 NFL season? I have learned that if you make a solid seven figures, you try to keep all of the reach-arounds to your own personal bedroom.

After a knee injury and prior to that steroid charges, Merriman is starting to sound like he deserves to play for another California team—the Oakland Raiders.

Then you lead into Brandon Marshall—another idiot. He is playing along now that the season starts and the real money is on the line, but he decides to protest during the preseason, acting like a little kid and being fined money that could have helped support many charities. Marshall, when suited up, has enough ability to be a very nice WR2 and probably a low-end WR1, but his head is still 17 percent up his butt in my opinion. Keep on pulling!

It just goes to show you how drama follows one chump, yet two outstanding players like Marion Barber and Felix Jones are looking forward to solid seasons. Marshall, grab a pen, a piece of paper, and do not doodle. Just take notes. Barber and Jones are players that you need to start taking an example from.
