MLB All-Star Game Final Vote 2015: 2nd Update for AL, NL Standings Released

Adam WellsJul 9, 2015

With just one day left in the Major League Baseball All-Star Game Final Vote, the updated standings have not changed, with Cincinnati Reds right-hander Johnny Cueto and Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas leading in their respective leagues.

Here's the full order for the National League, via MLB on Twitter:

And the American League:

The AL vote has been shaken up to some degree as New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, who is currently fourth in the voting, was added to the All-Star team Thursday in place of injured Kansas City Royals outfielder Alex Gordon, according to MLB's official Twitter account.

Gordon has been placed on the disabled list with a groin ailment, which means Gardner won't have to sweat out the Final Vote any longer.

The 31-year-old speedster is having a remarkable year as he is hitting .305 with 10 home runs, 40 RBI and 15 stolen bases. This represents the first All-Star nod of his career.

According to Mark Newman of MLB.com, St. Louis Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez is making a late push after passing Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, and while not posting full vote totals, the top four players in the NL are only separated by one percent.

Clayton Kershaw, who has hasn't shined his brightest over the season's first half, made a compelling case on Wednesday with a complete-game shutout of Philadelphia that included 13 strikeouts.

Cueto should maintain a lot of support in the final day before balloting closes, as Reds fans will want to make sure that one of their players is on the field for the All-Star Game in their home park.

“I would love to pitch in the All-Star Game. I want to do it,” Cueto said via David Ginsberg of the Associated Press, via The Columbus Dispatch. “It’s an All-Star Game in Cincinnati, with my fans in my house with my team.”

As the two starting pitchers look to see if either will be heading to the summer showcase, Steve Dilbeck of the Los Angeles Times threw his support behind Cueto:

"

It's also more run support than Johnny Cueto has received (3.50), and if any pitcher should be complaining he was left off the All-Star team, it's Cueto.

Cueto has a better ERA (2.61), WHIP (0.87), opponent batting average (.190) and opponent on-base (.236) than Kershaw. About the only place Kershaw has been clearly superior is in strikeouts. Both have given up more home runs — 11 after Wednesday's game — than one would like.

(...)

Kershaw has swell numbers, just not ones that scream, “He just has to be an All-Star!” It's no insult to be an All-Star runner-up.

"

Moustakas, per Newman's report, has a total of 11.8 million votes. For comparison, Cueto has 7.5 million votes. The Kansas City contingent has been strong throughout the All-Star voting process, with four Royals voted as starters, and that's continuing in the Final Vote.

While Cueto still needs help to secure his spot on the NL roster, something miraculous would have to happen for Moustakas to lose his AL spot. Voting ends at 4 p.m. ET on Friday, so there's still time for a shake-up.
