David West to Spurs: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Tim DanielsJul 6, 2015

Veteran forward David West reportedly reached an agreement with the San Antonio Spurs on Monday, according to David Aldridge of NBA.com, further bolstering the team's status as a legitimate title contender.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reported the one-year deal was for the veterans' minimum, worth $1.4 million.

The Spurs confirmed the deal on July 17.

West watched his role in Indiana decline over the past few years, having averaged just 11.7 points last season after checking in at 17.1 points per game during the 2012-13 campaign. The power forward also saw his minutes and usage on the offensive end drop during that timeframe.

Wojnarowski pointed out just how much West is clearly valuing winning over a much larger paycheck:

West decided against picking up his player option for next season, which would have paid him $12.6 million, according to Spotrac. He didn't rule out returning to the Indiana Pacers at the time, but it allowed him to hit the open market July 1.

It was a bit surprising to see West turn down the option given its value and the uncertainty a player faces heading into free agency. Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders noted the decision was about more than money, though:

In that context, it was understandable West wanted to see what other possibilities were out there.

Ultimately, the 12-year veteran decided it was time to move on after spending the last four years with the Pacers. As Kennedy mentioned, he should be a welcome addition for the team both in terms of his play and as an off-court presence.

At 34, it's unlikely he'll return to his previous heights as a player. He was a double-double machine who averaged around 20 points and nine rebounds during his peak with the New Orleans Pelicans (then Hornets) and made a pair of All-Star appearances.

He's still capable of filling a secondary offensive role, though, and also remains a good rebounder. Considering the Spurs' salary-cap limitations after luring LaMarcus Aldridge to San Antonio, snagging West on a veterans'-minimum deal represents an excellent value signing.
