Texas A&M Comes Out Firing on All Cylinders

Jeff ShullSep 8, 2009

Texas A&M blew the University of New Mexico out of the water. Jerrod Johnson to Jeff Fuller seems to be as exciting a duo as any other in the country.

The rushing attack looks to be back to normal after a dismal 2008 campaign. They ran for 245 yards and three scores in a 41-6 thrashing.

Behind the arm and legs of Jerrod Johnson—formerly the No. 1 scrambling recruit in the state of Texas—the Aggie offense torched UNM for 606 yards, including 406 from Johnson himself.

Jerrod Johnson has been compared to Vince Young, and the junior is finally poised to live up to those expectations. With Stephen McGee in the NFL, he will finally have a full season to prove his worth.

True Freshman Christine Michael had a fantastic day, rushing for 93 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. He was the second option to Cyrus Gray in terms of touches, but he made more of his opportunities.

Sophomore stud Jeff Fuller looks like he will break every receiving record at the storied University. He had 10 catches for 110 yards and a score on Saturday.

Texas A&M has never had a receiver with a 900 yard season, let alone a 1000 yard season. Fuller looks like he will surpass both milestones this year.

The defense—albeit against a weak opponent—was stiffling. They allowed only 231 yards of total offense, including only 21 yards on 24 carries for a YPC of less than 1. The first six drives for the Lobos resulted in punts.

Texas A&M has an opportunity in front of them that is in unfamiliar territory; to be a dark horse for the Big 12 championship. Until the last three or four years, A&M was always in the hunt for the Big 12.

The last few seasons have been one of the worst stretches in school history, and the Aggies have a chance to burst back onto the scene with a prolific offense.

Hopefully the offense will continue to thrive against tougher opponents.
