Michigan State Football Recruiting on Fire as Spartans Land 4 Commits in 4 Days

Brian PedersenJun 8, 2015

Michigan State has carried its on-field success in the past two seasons over to the recruiting trail, snaring a quartet of top-flight defensive prospects in the last four days. In doing so, the Spartans blew away a slew of fellow Big Ten suitors who were hoping to land the same players.

According to ESPN's Tom VanHaaren, 4-star tackle Naquan Jones is the latest recruit to commit to the Spartans, coming on board on Monday.

He joins 3-star tackle Mike Panasiuk and 4-star defensive ends Josh King and Auston Robertson as recent additions to Michigan State's Class of 2016, which is up to 17 players and has risen to sixth in 247Sports' composite team rankings.

Jones, from Evanston, Illinois, is rated as the No. 264 player in the 2016 class and the 25th-best defensive tackle. The 6'4", 283-pound prospect chose MSU over Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and South Carolina.

Earlier on Monday, MSU got a commitment from Panasiuk, who is 6'3" and 285 pounds and rated as the No. 38 defensive tackle in the country. The Roselle, Illinois native picked the Spartans over Penn State and Wisconsin.

King got the ball rolling with his commitment on Friday, when the 6'6", 250-pound edge-rusher from Darien, Illinois selected MSU over Michigan, Penn State and USC. King is rated No. 75 overall in the 2016 class and considered the nation's sixth-best strong-side defensive end.

Robertson, from Fort Wayne, Indiana, is a 6'5", 260-pound prospect who picked MSU on Sunday over Michigan and Notre Dame. He's rated as the No. 81 overall player in 2016 and the country's fifth-best weak-side defensive end.

MSU defensive line coach Ron Burton was the point man on all four players' recruitment, and by virtue of securing each commitment, he's moved up from No. 317 to No. 7 on 247Sports' recruiter rankings, per Steve Wiltfong.

"There isn’t a coaching staff in the country happier than Michigan State right now when talking recruiting," Wiltfong wrote. "And there certainly isn’t a position coach more excited than Spartans defensive line coach Ron Burton."
