Georgia Football: Projecting Who Will Win Bulldogs' Open Starting Positions

Brian JonesJun 7, 2015

When Greyson Lambert decided he wanted to transfer from the Virginia Cavaliers to the Georgia Bulldogs, it made the race for the starting quarterback position more interesting in Athens.

He is looking to win the starting job over three other quarterbacks, but because he is coming into a new system, he will be three to four months behind.

That said, Lambert is just one of the few players on the roster looking to take over one of the open starting positions during preseason camp. The Bulldogs did not lose a ton of players from last year’s team, but there are some positions that will need new starters. And while some positions are easy to project in terms of who will win the starting jobs, a couple of battles will come down to the wire.

So here’s a look at the players who will win the Bulldogs' open starting jobs this fall.

Quarterback

1 of 5

Projected Starter: Brice Ramsey

Lambert, who played at Virginia for two seasons, does have the most college experience of the four quarterbacks on the roster, and he should have a good chance to win the starting job. But Brice Ramsey will win in a close race.

Ramsey was the backup for Hutson Mason last year, and he was able to make some plays in limited action. The one thing he will need to do consistently is throw the ball downfield. If there was one area where the Bulldogs were weak last year, it was the downfield passing attack.

Faton Bauta and Jacob Park are talented and will push the other two. So Ramsey, who threw for 333 yards and three touchdowns last season, is not a shoe-in to be the starter, and it will be interesting to see who stands out when it’s all said and done.

Center

Projected Starter: Brandon Kublanow

This position is more interesting because whoever is not the starter at center could start at left guard.

Brandon Kublanow, Isaiah Wynn and Hunter Long have all gotten looks at center this spring. According to Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald, Wynn manned the position in the early stages of spring practice, but Kublanow took over toward the end of spring practice because Wynn had issues snapping the football out of the shotgun. Long has been the top reserve lineman, and he should see a lot of playing time this season regardless.

The Bulldogs have been lucky to have Ben Jones and David Andrews hold the center position down for the last seven years. Both were smart players who played with a lot of intensity. Kublanow is the same type of player, and he should have no issues making the switch.

No. 2 Wide Receiver

Projected Starter: Reggie Davis

Justin Scott-Wesley should make a push for the starting job because he will be healthy when the season kicks off. Also, some talented players will be coming into the fold this spring, so Davis will have some work to do.

However, head coach Mark Richt told Jake Rowe of 247Sports that Reggie Davis was able to raise his game to another level. Davis had 60 receiving yards in the G-Day game because he was able to get separation from defenders in the middle of the field.

The other players who should push Davis are Charlie Hegedus, Kenneth Towns, Shakenneth Williams and incoming freshman Terry Godwin.

Defensive Ends

4 of 5

Projected Starters: Sterling Bailey, Josh Dawson

There’s a good chance that whoever wins the starting jobs will have to share time with the younger talent coming in because, despite the youth, the defensive line, especially the defensive ends, is much better than it was last season.

Sterling Bailey is an experienced defensive end who started nine games in 2013. He made only one start last season but should be back in the fold this fall after having a productive spring game, where he notched a sack and batted down a pass.

Josh Dawson has seen a ton of action in his career, and he also had a strong spring game, where he registered three tackles. He started four games last season.

Both Bailey and Dawson will need to watch out for Jonathan Ledbetter and Trent Thompson because they will make strong pushes for the starting jobs despite being true freshmen.

Inside Linebackers

Projected Starters: Tim Kimbrough, Reggie Carter

This is not a surprise to anyone because both Tim Kimbrough and Reggie Carter were the top reserves for Ramik Wilson and Amarlo Herrera last season.

Kimbrough looked like he was in preseason form in the spring game, as he was active when defending the run, according to Jake Rowe of 247Sports. The same can be said for Carter, as he was able to show some sideline-to-sideline ability. Both players finished with a combined 11 tackles.

The one player to watch is Jake Ganus, who had a stellar spring season. The UAB transfer was active against the run and pass during the spring practices, and he should push Carter and Kimbrough for a starting spot during fall camp.
