Cristiano Ronaldo is number one! Has football hit an all time low?

The Champions league final has eliminated all doubt. Manchester United is the best team in Europe and Cristiano Ronaldo must surely be considered the best player in the world.

The question again is whether the EPL has hit a high or if European football has lost its way.

Are we really expected to believe that Cristiano's header, ten minutes or so of objective football, often pointless passes, lack of control and of course yet another missed penalty are supposed to represent as good as it gets?

Perhaps with the real Ronaldo spending more of his efforts on the babes or whatevers, Ronaldinho chasing after the mighty buck instead of the ball, Kaka on a break from excellence, the eternally injured Messi and the star Riquelme hidden in a closet... all we have left is Cristiano.

Is it that football has progressed or has the bar been lowered?

Manchester United vs Chelsea had its moments of great football and Cristiano did appear to show signs of talent on rare occasions. Drugba was efficient and so were many others. However no team nor player truly entertained.

There was a lack of continued constructive football with the match often degenerating into scrappy or something reminiscent of a third division brawl.

All that can save the sport now is the FIFA world club championship where other brands of football will come up against that which currently represents Europe.

We can only hope and pray that everyone will be allowed to play with specific emphasis on Juan Roman Riquelme who might just be the last reminder of what football really looks like currently playing.

  1. Ronaldo certainly did not stamp his authority on the game, which everybody said he would do.

The best in the world? No Chance!!

    1. correct ur statement..........he must qite obviously be the best in the world nae another player so far this season that has scored 42 goals..................cant hear you........! .................is that no one????!!!! exactly point proven!!...........i think ppl hu disrespect such talent r pure jealus that Manchester Unted have him and your team dont..........well i suggest you find better scouts for ur team!!! get a life!!....now question yourself again........ Cristiano Ronaldo...best in the world?? not even debatable!!!

    2. Manulover is right! U R JUST JEALOUS. CRISTIANO RONALDO IS THE BESTTTTTTT!( AND THIS IS COMING FROM A GIRL) k so just shut it. he is the best and u r just jealous and u cant take it that Chelsea lost cause they aren't as good as MANCHESTER UNITED or as good as CRISTIANO RONALDO! ♥

  2. he is the best in the world. What you mean by `yet another missed penalty`? He's missed three all season. big deal. jealousy is a cruel thing Jimmy.

  3. hey look world first player is messi, then kaka, then i don't know maybe ronaldo maybe not or maybe ibrahamavich or dragba or someone else.... not sure

  4. Rubbish absolutely rubbish comment ,either you are a chelsea fan or you hate Man United or CR7.
What this kid did throughout the season was is nothing short of amazing!!!!!!!!
For you to say the bar has been lowered that only shows your hate, one must be freakin blind not to be impressed by or amazed by what this kid has done ,so do yourself a favor get another job cause you suck at this one!!!!!!!!

  5. how can you dispute his status as the best..........Ronaldo haters will never change.......

as for Salomon,"never stamped his authority"...???? bullshit,he had Essien and co. in his pocket for most parts of the game,he also set up tevez who couldn't score,so what if he missed one.......Baggio missed one in WC 94,does that lower his status as one of the all time greats...??? I think not.

    grow up Chavs.

    1. Cristiano is a few million light years away from the level of the likes of Baggio.
He`s weak and him and ManU will get it good in the FIFA club matches.
ManU must play now that they have qualified.

Start making your excuses from now ....humiliation is on its way.

    2. Ronaldo had Essien in his pocket for large parts of the first half.. And Co? Who, my friend? Who? Whoelse did Ronaldo trouble during the game apart from Essien?

I never said Ronaldo played shit, he played alright but there were at least 4 or 5 players from the 22 on the pitch that played better than him.

He skinned Essien a few times.. So what?

Dont drown in your own glory, homie. Its stupid fans that are blinded by the own success, like you that make the rest of us hate Ronaldo and United...

      Hush baby..

  6. besides if Kaka deserved to get the awards last season for winning the UCL for milan, then CR7 deserves it even more for winning two trophies in crunch times.....42 goals.....that's more than what any other player has scored this season.
    get over it,you lost,we won.

    1. It`s funny ...you are a ManU and Cristiano fan.

Yet you opened an article that was headed ~Cristiano is number one! .....

I think deep down inside you were thinking ......who is the idiot who wrote such a thing after watching that match?

Deep down inside you know he was disappointing and really not worth all the hot air.

  7. lol lol.....and who counted the mispasses and back heel attempt that lost posession in his own half during the time chelcie was beginning to stamp his authority?

The truth is he was magnificent till the time the tide was going for manu..once they start losing it, he just disappeared. I dont understand why people who praise him do not acknowledge that very fact. And what he ran rags over Essian, an offensive player? big deal....lets show us what he did against the best in that role...say Gattusoo, Zamrotta....

Credit need to be given where it is due...to that extend his 2 passes and goal in the first half was all we had.

Hargreeves was brilliant, Evra did well and Tevez the monster tried to control the midfield much better than carrick and scholes( although was sloppy in front of the goal and lost posession in some crucial areas)

All in all...glory united...may be they deserved it better than any other team in Europe this year (Villareal perhaps an exception for the sheer accomplishment vs. resources scale)

But for Ronaldo...waiting to see him at Real next year...with his player of the year award:)

  8. We must make something clear. I said Cristiano is the best. I said ManU are the champs.

The point I`m making is that football on the whole is in low tide.

To such a point that the so called BEST is a sad spectacle to watch.

  9. And yes...Jimmy, Boca is in to the Semis...hopefully there is a final plot written for a showdwon...
May be Roman will come out from his hide out and show us a real spectacle in Japan

    1. We can only hope and pray as lovers of the game.

Next year I also hope for a luckier Servilla with Daniel Alves. Unfortunately I did not mention him in this article. A reinforced Milan with Pato hitting some kind of peak would be nice.

I wish continued strength to ManU so we can see if this is really a benchmark or know that maybe footie took a year off in 2008.

And of course like you said I can`t wait for the World Club matches. After watching all the leagues I am convinced that Boca is the strongest team in the world and Riquelme is knocking on the door of greatness.

But anything can happen in football that`s why its a beautiful sport.

  10. Ronaldo will win the world player of the year award simply for what he has acheived this season...there's no need for ronaldo haters and no need for overly smug United fans.

I'm a hardcore United fan and I am very glad that We are double winners this season....and to top it off was Ronaldo's comments to the TV crew (which I'm thinking ANAND didn't see??)

"So Cristiano...you have acheived so much in such a small time at this club....what next? will you be heading for madrid??"

"No no no, I'm going to stay. I thought when I missed the penalty that we had lost the game, but the lads believed they could score and they did. This is one of the happiest days of my life, I'm very very proud"

And as for the world club championship Jimmy....I think you made some foolish comments to write United off already. prepare excuses? we wont need to as I think we'll win it. This team is something special and you may be eating your words come the final. And Boca juniors were certainly no world beaters when I watched them play PSV Eindhoven in the Vodafone Cup at Old Trafford, so that should be an exciting match!

  11. Jimmy McJerkins, S, Darlon, whatever you want to call yourself why do you hide behind so many names?

    1. Well Simon try to find S or Darlon on the writers list.

Jimmy seems to have gotten me on the list and my articles read. Even with just 3 articles I`m up there.

My style has not changed as you can clearly recognise me in an instant. So to explain why S and Darlon seem to disappear is a mystery.

Thanks Simon I thought no one would ever ask.

Now the cat is out who ever is responsible for this will probably axe Jimmy too. sigh.

  12. correct ur statement..........he must qite obviously be the best in the world nae another player so far this season that has scored 42 goals..................cant hear you........! .................is that no one????!!!! exactly point proven!!...........i think ppl hu disrespect such talent r pure jealus that Manchester Unted have him and your team dont..........well i suggest you find better scouts for ur team!!! get a life!!....now question yourself again........ Cristiano Ronaldo...best in the world?? not even debatable!!!

  13. Well....the biggest club in the world still needs players from sporting and boca neways:)

  14. ranaldo is the best and u guyz iz just hatin on him because he aint on ur team and he will stilll destroy ne body u is strate jelose he is pure skill and he is the best

  15. I think people need to separate the issues with Cristiano Ronaldo. People like him cause he's great. People don't like him because he comes across as arrogant. There is no doubt in my mind that Ronaldo is in the Top 3 best footballers in the world right now...probably #1.

But I also have a hard time with him because he acts arrogantly. His continued stutter-step on the penalty shots is getting old. He is a great player, but missed at Barca and last night, so he's not perfect. It seems like he should rethink some aspects of the way he showcases his skill.

As I watched Man U go up to get their trophy last night, I couldn't help but think that Ronaldo needs guidance from an older teammate...someone like Giggs to say, "Hey, you're the best in the world. We just won the double and you were a major contributor in that. But in 15 years, you'll be another name on the list of football greats. How do you want to be remembered? As a great footballer who was cocky? Or a great footballer who loved the beautiful game and was humbled by his chance to play it?"

  16. everyone needs to sh*t the F*ck up and give him a break, he proved that he's number one, he scored the only goal, if it wasn't for that goal there would be no PKs. even though he missed one PK doesn't mean anything, u need goals to win matches, and guess what ronaldo does, he SCORES GOALSSS, as a winger he's very dangeous. 42 goals in the world this season tells it all. and he's ganna win fifa player of the year. so SHUT THE FUCK UP EVERYONE, specially anti-Ronaldos.Period

  17. I dont see why people cant appreciate his game. He has lit up the league this year along with Torres, Fabregas, Essien, Hleb etc. 42 goals at his age and position is unheard of really. Truly amazing.

I can see peoples point when they say he is cocky etc. I can why it riles them. But so was Cantona and he is considered a legend also. At 23 he is still very immature(wining to the ref etc) but every year he is improving. As for mentioning missed penalties, thats total bollox, he missed three, so what.

And I seem to remember the 'Great' Riquelme himself missing a vital match winning penalty against Arsenal for Villareal in the Champions League.

  18. ronaldo is palnet football bravo cristiano ronaldooooooooooo

  19. "never argue with a fool, cos onlookers will not be able to tell who is who..." - tht said, ignore the chelsea haters...

  20. jealousy is a horrible thing jimmy. he scores in the final and yet he still isn't good enough. call urself a football fan?

  21. There is a simple reason. In his post he mentioned poor performance EXCEPT the goal. Ronaldo fans only look at his goals and NOTHING else- scoring 42 goals means he contributes a lot to the team, it does not automatically mean he is the best in the world. Why do people think it does? Because he contributes the most to his team? What about Fabregas? He scored 13, with 29 assists- does that mean he's as good, because in the way of goals he has contributed as much to his team? No-one is denying that Ronaldo is not a good goal scorer, he is AMAZING at headers, he blasts every single free-kick he's given, and so a few are bound to go in, his penalties aren't as good (including one for portugal he missed 4/9 last season)- his true skill (from people that watch the games and don't just blurt out his 42 goals from MOTD or wherever) are in his positioning, the vast majority of his goals are from good tap-ins and headers- that they are from dribbling or that he plays on the wing and not at all true. Outside of his goals he does give the ball away a lot, he absolutely still dives (even if not as much) and his overall performance is POOR. It is simply not enough to scream 42 goals, 42 goals without actually having watched him play in ever game- the best player in the world must be judged in all his skills, and Ronaldo honestly only progresses in one- GoalScoring. It's easy to type into youtube Ronaldo dribbling and see him getting past players etc. but in the majority of games, consistently, doesn't.

Btw I mentioned Fabregas, but I'm a Liverpool Fan.
