Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds Draws Only 2,000 Fans!

Bill MckillopAug 31, 2009

Today as part of the day-and-night double-header, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 and only about 2,000 fans saw the game.  This has to be the lowest ever attendance I ever heard of in my baseball lifetime.

This has to be one of the worst and greatest things to happen for baseball all rolled into one.  Granted, this was a rainout make-up game, but only 2,000 fans?

I understand that the Red and Pirates are not some of the better teams in baseball, but only 2,000 fans?

I know its almost September and both teams have been out of the race for months, but only 2,000 fans?

I know the Pirates traded away what seems like everyone, and the Reds got Scott Rolen, but only 2,000 fans?

Teams       W     L     Winning %  Games Back

Cincinnati 57 73         .438               19

Pittsburgh 53 76         .411               22.5

Neither the Reds or Pirates are setting the league on fire attendance-wise because of the teams' poor play that has them at the bottom of the NL Central standings.

It’s not the Reds or Pirates fans fault that they are not coming out and supporting the team.

It’s not the economy’s fault that the Pirates and Reds are not drawing fans.

It is the fault of ownership and management of both teams that the most die-hard fans will not come out and support a team that has no shot at the postseason year after year.

Rank/ Team / Avg Attendance per game

24   Cincinnati   23,674
28   Pittsburgh   19,417

This low attendance numbers of not only this game, but the attendance numbers in general, put all owners on notice.  The customers that you call fans will not support a product of poor quality.

Watching baseball is not that entertaining when the home team loses 60% of its games and makes poor personnel decisions.

“Root, root, root for the home team, and if they don’t win, it's a shame” is a line from "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," the most famous baseball song ever.  Listen to the words of this song and actually put a good competitive product on the field.
