Two Years in Spain for Ricky Rubio, Top Point Guard in Two Years for Jonny Flynn

Ricky Rubio has signed a six-year contract with Spanish club Regal Barcelona with an "affordable" buyout in 2011, according to published reports.

Unfortunately, the news appears to be true.

Now that the Rubio situation is done (and I'm now disappointed), what is the future for the point guard situation in Minnesota?

Jonny Flynn.

And I am very happy and sad at the same time.

Although the Rubio-Flynn frontcourt could not work immediately, Timberwolves fans should have been well-prepared for this to happen, and now the bonafide best point guard in the summer league will get his 30 minutes on the floor.

Jonny Flynn was really a point guard that deserves better than a backup spot to a Spanish sensation. He has a lot of intangibles already and is gifted beyond his years. He totally embraces Minnesota to the fullest, and the Wolves are very lucky to have him.

With a combination of speed and quickness, shooting, passing, and athleticism—along with his incredible verbal and physical leadership—Jonny Flynn can very well outclass this draft class and is a lock for Rookie of the Year candidacy.

Ricky Rubio's Future in the NBA

If this news is true, I just know that he will not be joining the Wolves in 2011. Kahn has said over and over again that his team is willing to wait, and while that might be true, it's not like the Timberwolves still have Sebastian Telfair starting at the point guard spot for the next two years.

We have a possible franchise player point guard, and he can very well average 14-16 points and 6-7 assists his rookie year, which would make him very "franchise" looking.

A lot of the staff members of other respective teams were impressed with Flynn and had him higher than Rubio on their draft boards.

If Flynn becomes a superstar point, then Rubio is trade bait in two years. Just around the time where the Wolves can make a serious playoff run, if not next year. If Rubio plays the same only better in his new situation, then the Wolves add another piece to the puzzle, who knows?

I just don't think that, if Rubio stays for two years, Flynn won't already be an upcoming elite point guard like Rajon Rondo. It just doesn't seem likely for him to not develop.

If Flynn busts (incredibly unlikely), or gets hurt (the guy is built like a running back with great body control), then welcome aboard, Mr. Rubio.

I really wanted Rubio, and initially thought that, no matter the cost, he was going to play in the NBA, but now it appears not. I'm extremely happy for Flynn if this news is true, and I'm happy for my respective Wolves.

Now...we need a solid backup point with some experience to help Flynn in Minnesota, and we need to resign Rodney Carney!
