England U19 Women to Replay Final 19 Seconds of Match in Unprecedented Ruling
Replaying a match because of unusual or controversial circumstances is hardly an unprecedented phenomenon.
Replaying the final 19 seconds of a match, on the other hand, is.
But such is the case for the England U19 women after a bizarre scene wherein the match referee made a blunder of epic proportions.
The scene:
- England trailed Norway 2-1 in the 96th minute in Belfast
- England were awarded a penalty
- England converted said penalty
- The referee disallowed the goal for encroachment
- Instead of allowing England to retake the kick (standard operating procedure under these circumstances), the referee awarded Norway a free-kick
- The match ended
The FA successfully protested the decision, and now the match will be replayed, but not in its entirety, just the 19 seconds that remain from the spot-kick.
Not only that, but the "kick-off" will be at exactly 9:45 p.m., when the penalty was awarded in the initial match.
It's a first-ever of sorts for UEFA, making it a strange night, indeed.
Update
On the same day England topped Switzerland 3-1, the match resumed with England's Leah Williamson hitting the spot-kick (no foul this time) and England earned the draw that sends them to Euro 2015.
Earlier on, Norway also defeated Northern Ireland 8-1, leaving both sides level with England having a superior goal differential.
The kick needed to be made to salvage the point and stay atop the table.
