Mercury-Sparks: My Thoughts after Watching a WNBA Game

D WizzleMay 19, 2008

I watched a great basketball game this weekend. It was a close battle and was not decided until the final seconds.

No, I am not talking about the Cavs vs. the Celtics game—but the Phoenix Mercury vs. the Los Angeles Sparks instead.

The WNBA contest this weekend between the Sparks and the Mercury was more exciting than the NBA playoff game yesterday. There was more scoring and more excitement.

Candace Parker, the rookie from the Sparks, is the Kobe Bryant of the WNBA. She can do it all and is already a superstar. In her first professional game, she almost had a triple-double. Parker had 34 points, 12 rebounds, and 8 assists. She was simply amazing.

The only weakness Parker seems to have is free-throw shooting. She shot 8-15 from the line and needs to work on that area of her game. She is as comfortable shooting the three-pointer as she is dribbling the ball up the court and dishing to a teammate for an open jumper.

TheĀ  Sparks were up 51-42 at halftime, but the Mercury came back and outscored them 30-22 in the third quarter. Parker made some clutch shots at the end of the game to seal the victory. The final score was 99-94 in favor of the Sparks.

Other stars that I enjoyed watching were Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter of the Mercury. Pondexter had 32 points and Taurasi had 24.

The Mercury like to run up and down and shoot as quickly as possible just like the Suns. This makes for entertaining basketball.

Overall, this was a very enjoyable game to watch. Parker is the next big thing in sports. The media doesn't cover WNBA much and the public does not really know about these talented female athletes. Hopefully stars like Pondexter and Parker will be more widely noticed and seen in the next few years.

I know I will be tuning in the next time I get a chance to watch a WNBA game.
