Champions League Final: Man Utd Vs Chelsea Vs The Pitch?

Barney CorkhillMay 18, 2008

It's a fantastic stadium no doubt, but the pitch at the Luzhniki, home of the Champions League final in Moscow, has been in question recently.

I was watching Sky Sports News earlier and even more problems with the pitch were exposed.

I also caught a glimpse of the pitch, and I have to say, it looks like a badly fitted carpet.

Now I know that the groundsmen would have been working day and night to try and get the pitch in perfect condition, and they've had to completely lay it all again, as it is usually artificial, but a playing surface in this condition is unacceptable, considering the importance of the game.

It is the biggest club game of the year. It is the biggest game between two English clubs ever. And it is in danger of being spoiled by the pitch.

I was also quite shocked to hear that they won't be making any changes to the pitch now, just to the sideline areas. Let me think, which one is more important?

The atmosphere will no doubt be fit for the occasion, but the pitch may ruin the whole spectacle.

The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo won't be able to perform as many dazzling skills on the biggest club stage on the planet. The fans that have paid thousands of pounds to get over there won't, therefore, be able to see the best players at their best.

This again raises the argument of whether the final should have been moved to Wembley.

I don't think it should've; Russia was given the chance to hold it, and that rightly wasn't taken away from them, but at least we would've gotten a better playing surface.

I have already predicted a dour match on Wednesday, with the two teams going there to avoid defeat rather than going there to win.

The price of losing will be just too big to have an entertaining, free-flowing game.

Sir Alex will want to win to, perhaps, end his career on a high.

Avram Grant will need to win to save his job, and will want to so he can eclipse the "special one".

Lets just hope that, in the small chance that these two teams put on a spectacular show to match the spectacle, the pitch doesn't have the final say.
