Formula One Australian Grand Prix Could Move to Sydney from Melbourne

Tom SunderlandMar 12, 2015

Sydney could make a daring attempt to take the Australia Grand Prix from Melbourne, it's been announced, depending on the results of the New South Wales government election.

According to Andrew Carswell and Peter Rolfe of the Herald Sun (h/t Fox Sports), Premier Peter Baird will put forth a bid to make a "Sydney street circuit," which would include the Harbour Bridge as part of its course.

Baird is quoted as saying:

"

I want the Formula One to come to Sydney, because no other city in the world could provide a more spectacular backdrop for this event. We know that this event is watched by up to 30 million people around the world, and securing the Grand Prix would put our already successful events strategy in pole position. But we need to get all the facts, before we move to bid.

"

The report details that Rod McGeoch, the pioneer of Sydney's 2000 Olympics bid, would be part of Baird's bid team alongside former News Corp Australia chief executive John Hartigan.

The announcement comes just two days prior to the 2015 Formula 1 season getting underway in Melbourne, with Baird evidently looking to make a statement regarding his own plans to take the Australia Grand Prix spotlight.
