Chicago Bears: Babied Cedric Benson Strikes Again

Adam RadMay 17, 2008

According toĀ ChicagoBears.com, LovieĀ Smith has said thatĀ Cedric Benson is the starting running back for the Chicago Bears.

In a question and answer segment the team's website features, a question was asked to the Bears' head coach about who the starting running back is. Smith stated that Benson is still the guy, but all 3 backups—Garrett Wolfe, Adrian Peterson, and Matt Forte—can push for that spot. He also said that Benson "has looked good in workouts out here...will get back to form and we see that guy that we know he is.''

This made me think, because what has he really done to earn his title as the starter? For a guy that can't catch, block, or run between the tackles, not to mention he endured a season-ending injury, I wouldn't start him. In fact, I'd highly consider cutting him.

Well, Lovie, what kind of guy are we dealing with here? I mean, let's not even get into the boating incident, because we have no idea what the truth really is and what happened, so let's not jump to conclusions. However, everything leading up to it has simply made Cedric out to be the bad guy.

He had character issues after being arrested back in college, but the Bears chose to ignore that. He held out into the regular season because of the dollar amount in his contract, which he has clearly not earned. Then, he ran his mouth, saying how he should be the starting running back when he has yet to establish himself as a premier running back in the NFL.

He ran Thomas Jones out of town, who was a leader through his work ethic and vocal skills, two things Cedric desperately lacks. Let's not forget that his own teammates don't even respect him for driving TJ out of town. Not to mention, Jones does EVERYTHING better than him, which includes catching the ball out of the backfield, running between the tackles, and pass blocking, three things Benson struggled with horribly last season.

Now, I'll give him some slack for the atrocious offensive line, but that doesn't really help his case. He wanted to be that guy.

However, Benson is a spoon-fed, little punk ass moron.

Let's not kid ourselves here:Ā  What Benson did on that boat was stupid. Drunk or not, the first thing he must realize is that when a police officer tells you to do something, you do it and do it now. Benson, being the prick he is, asks the officer why he must do more tests. He believes that you failed the first set of them and wants to give you more. What do you have to hide? If you really were sober, wouldn't you just please the officers, do it, and move on to your business?

No, that's not the Cedric Benson way.

Now, what happened after that point is remained to be seen, but for now, Cedric Benson is a complete moron who should not be allowed to handle the responsibility as an NFL running back. Remember that this is a privilege to play in this league, not your right.

I'd like to say that he's throwing away his gift, but when did he ever have it as a Chicago Bear?
