He’s one under par on the day (as of this writing) and tied for 20th in the overall standings!
This isn’t the untouchable, world-consuming monster we saw McIlroy morph into in 2014, but it’s not exactly a burn-the-bag situation for a professional golfer.
Nonetheless, McIlroy is unhappy, and after a botched shot from the fairway on No. 9, the Northern Irishman slung his 3-iron far, far into the adjacent water hazard.

This isn’t a great look for McIlroy, who once apologized for bending a 9-iron at the 2013 U.S. Open. Given his gigantic sponsorship deal, the whole world knows McIlroy is wrecking The Swoosh every time he debones an iron.
McIlroy is on pace to make the cut at Trump National Doral. Hopefully he can make do without that long iron.
