Scott Boras Is The Greatest
Scott Boras is not the anti-Christ. Scott Boras isn't the reason the economy is in recession. Scott Boras does not have weapons of mass destruction. Scott Boras is not bad for baseball. Scott Boras is the best at what he does.
Scott Boras, the super agent, is known for getting the best possible deal for his clients. He is a notorious tough negotiator. Scott Boras has some of the highest paid clients in baseball. His clients include Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez, Prince Fielder, Matt Holliday, Mark Teixeria, and many more prominent major leaguers and top prospects. Some people blame Scott Boras for the gap between the has and has nots in MLB.
There is no question about it; Scott Boras is hated by baseball executives. Some teams refuse to draft players because they are represented by Scott Boras. He has been accused of taking advantage of the draft slotting system, by having clients turn down signing bonuses that don't meet his and his clients' demands, and advising them to go back to school or play independent ball. He has even had some players secretly get their GEDs, then go undrafted so they can become free agents and get a deal they want. Landon Powell did this but didn't get a deal he wanted so he elected to go to the University of North Carolina.
Scott Boras' name has been in the news a lot recently because he represents Stephen Strasburg, the number one overall pick in the 2009 MLB Draft. Boras supposedly demanded a $50 million signing bonus, however this was pure hyperbole because today on WFAN 660, Boras admitted he was looking for $22 million. The Washington Nationals signed Strasburg last night for $15 million. So today on blogs and in papers everywhere, Boras is being blamed again for all of what is wrong with sports today. Well I disagree.
Boras's job as an agent is to get the best possible deal he can for his client. He has no responsibility to the fans, the team, or MLB. His responsibility is to his client and his client's wishes. There is a reason Boras represents some of the best players and prospects in baseball. He's damn good at what he does. On his reputation alone, its plausible he gets a couple extra dollars for his clients.
So call him whatever you want. He's better than anyone in world at his job. He takes advantage of situations in order to milk as much money out of a team as he can. Boras got a record deal for A-Rod in 2007, he got Barry Zito the highest contract for a pitcher at the time, and he just got Stephen Strasburg $15 million without having the kid through a pitch. Simply put, Scott Boras is the best.
