Boston Beanpot 2015: Score and Twitter Reaction from Boston vs. Northeastern
Boston University's five-year Beanpot drought is over. Northeastern's, which is the longest of any of the four schools in the prestigious tournament, will rage on for at least another year.
Captain Matt Grzelcyk scored the game-winner in overtime, spoiling Northeastern's thrilling third-period comeback and giving the Terriers a 4-3 edge to win the prestigious Beanpot tournament:
Grzelcyk, the Boston Bruins' third-round pick in 2012, scored a pair of goals on the night to deny the Huskies their first Beanpot title since 1998 and earn MVP honors:
Earlier in the day, five-time defending champs Boston College defeated Harvard in a dramatic overtime contest to take third place, but it would prove to be mild compared to the night's main feature at TD Garden.
Mike Moran got the scoring started less than three minutes after the opening puck drop, as he turned a steal at the blue line into a breakaway and calmly finished past Clay Witt to put Boston in front.
But before the Terriers had any time to celebrate, sophomore John Stevens beat Matt O'Connor glove side to even up the score about 30 seconds later.
It was a fast and furious start, and the rest of the period would play out the same way, with the action moving back and forth. Play-by-play announcer Alex Faust indicated that the teams racked up a combined 46 shot attempts in the first 20 minutes.
Many of those were solid chances, with perhaps the best one belonging to Boston.
As the first period was winding down, burgeoning star Jack Eichel made a slick backhand pass to Evan Rodrigues on a two-on-one. The senior appeared set to score, but Witt made a gorgeous glove save to keep the game tied.
Hockey writer Jashvina Shah provided a look:
Northeastern appeared to have the momentum, but the second period belonged to Boston.
Robbie Baillargeon cleaned up a rebound after Witt couldn't corral a save, and as Faust noted, it was poor defense all around from the Huskies:
About nine minutes later, Grzelcyk showed a glimpse of what was later to come when he doubled the lead with a rocket past Witt from the left point. ]
ESPN's John Buccigross gave his thoughts on the junior defenseman's potential:
The second period would end with Boston ahead by two goals. Many, including Faust, assumed it was all over:
But giving up just hasn't been the Huskies' style this season. Jim Madigan's team, which started 0-8-1 only to achieve a huge turnaround, has consistently scored clutch third-period goals. He talked about that resilience before the game, per The Boston Globe's Nancy Marrapese-Burrell:
"One thing I do know is we’ve been in a lot of close games in the last five minutes and have found a way to get a goal late in a game. We did it at Minnesota, we did it against Yale and we did it again [against BC in the Beanpot semifinal]. Our guys are confident in these close, tight games late in the third period.
"
And the Huskies did it again on Monday night.
About midway through the third period, leading scorer Kevin Roy took matters into his own hands with a scorching shot past Matt O'Connor. Dustin Darou cleaned up a scramble in front of the night 95 seconds later to tie the game.
Shah provided a look at the wild sixth goal:
There were a handful of scoring chances over the final 10 minutes, but neither team could put together the game-winner. As Faust noted, it was an appropriate ending to regulation in what has been a thoroughly entertaining, unpredictable tournament:
But it wouldn't take long for Boston to put an end to the thriller. Just 51 seconds into overtime, Grzelcyk finished off the power play and the Beanpot tournament with a wrister from about 35 feet out.
BU's Twitter feed provides a look at the celebration:
Fortunately for Northeastern, which is assuredly disappointed, it won't have to wait long for a chance at revenge, as these two teams will meet again on both Friday and Saturday.
Tensions should still be high, and if those contests provide even a fraction of the excitement from Monday's championship game, they will be well worth the price of admission.
No matter what happens this weekend, though, Boston has earned bragging rights over its crosstown rivals for the first time since 2009.
