Leave The Pats Alone: A New England Fan's Reaction To All Of the Controversy

Donna WMay 16, 2008

As a New England Patriots fan, this Spygate thing has gotten out of control.

Actually, as a sports fan, this has gotten out of control.

This started in September, and some people (cough cough Arlen Specter cough cough) just can’t seem to let it go. HEY, in case you haven’t heard, Matt Walsh didn’t come up with anything new. So we can move forward now; maybe attack Tony Romo some more for his taste in women.

Some people just can’t seem to let it go, so I offer here once and for all the Patriot fan’s response to all of the allegations and comments made by Patriot-haters.

First off, I do admit that what the Patriots did with the videos was cheating. I’m not going to come up with any excuses for what Belichick and company did, because I can’t. However, you can stop calling them cheaters now.

News flash: they were caught last September. What followed was arguably the best NFL season on file. They went 16-0 in the regular season, only losing to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl. This all happened after they had been caught.

Second, Matt Walsh did not come up with evidence that the Pats videotaped the Rams’ walkthrough before Super Bowl IIIVI. In fact, he admitted not having videotaped that day. The Boston Herald even retracted its comments. This whole thing is just an excuse for Rams fans that have trouble letting go of that loss.

Okay, Walsh did admit to watching the walkthrough, but there is no crime in watching a practice, nor in reporting it to coaches. Roger Goodell said this is not illegal. So why all of the press about it? There was no illegal activity related to that game.

Third, all of the trash talking towards Tom Brady is absurd. His personal life is PERSONAL. That means discussion of his son is not a legitimate discussion in relation to his football ability. Same goes for his photo shoots and supermodel girlfriend.

The fact is, Brady is arguably the best quarterback in the league. People have nothing bad to say about his playing, so they have to talk about his personal life. As far as Pats fans are concerned, as long as Brady continues to perform up to his standard he can do whatever he wants. At least his girlfriend doesn’t distract him (once again, Tony Romo).

Finally, Senator Specter: what in the world are you thinking?

Spygate was not a legal infraction, thus it does not warrant an investigation. As far as I can tell, this whole thing is a Philadelphia Eagles fan’s attempt to rationalize his team’s loss in the Super Bowl all those years ago. It also seems to be a desperate bid to gain favor in Pennsylvania before elections.

So the moral of the story? Leave the Pats alone. People need to realize that all of the hatred towards the Patriots only fuels them more. Every thing you say is magnified by Belichick in the locker room, and it helps the Pats win. They fed off this animosity last year, and they won 18 in a row. Think about it.
