Joseph ZuckerFeb 20, 2015

After years of behind-the-scenes wrangling and public posturing on both sides, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao finally hashed out their differences and agreed to meet one another in the ring.

Mayweather officially confirmed he will fight Pacquiao on May 2.

"What the world has been waiting for has arrived. Mayweather vs. Pacquiao on May 2, 2015, is a done deal," he wrote. "I promised the fans we would get this done, and we did."

Yahoo Sports' Kevin Iole reported that the bout will be held inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. ESPN.com's Dan Rafael provided a few more of the specifics:

"You have to be grateful that this is finally happening," said Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, per Rafael. "You can't bemoan the false starts and the inability to do this before. It's here now."

Indeed, this fight has been years in the making. Boxing fans have long clamored for the one marquee event the sport has left—at least for the foreseeable future.

Things actually reached the point when many gave up hope and lost interest in Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, arguing the sell-by date for the superfight had long expired.

As ESPN's Todd Grisham tweeted, those critics will be lining up like everyone else to see the two step into the ring:

Although Mayweather vs. Pacquiao is unlikely to "save boxing" or make it a more mainstream sport again, it looks poised to shatter every sort of record in terms of revenue from pay-per-view and the live gate.

The fight will also help to end the seemingly unending debate as to which fighter is truly superior.
