Under-the-Radar Arizona Diamondbacks Players Ready to Impress This Spring

Adam YoungFeb 24, 2015

Spring training is officially here. The Arizona Diamondbacks' pitchers and catchers reported to camp Feb. 19.

Coming off a season in which Arizona finished with the worst record in baseball, there are several under-the-radar players who have the potential to impress this spring.

The D-Backs are looking like a rebuilding team, making these players more likely to have an impact early on.

Who will step up and make a name for himself this season? Here are three under-the-radar players who will open some eyes during spring training.

All statistics courtesy of baseball-reference.com unless otherwise noted.

Peter O'Brien

1 of 3

Peter O'Brien is making a habit of appearing on the D-Backs' lists of potential breakout candidates. The fact of the matter is Arizona is down this season at the catcher position.

Tuffy Gosewisch is slated to open the season behind the plate despite hitting .225 last season with one home run in 41 games.

Oscar Hernandez is listed as the backup catcher but is known for defense rather than offense. He hit .249 with nine home runs in 94 games.

O'Brien, on the other hand, combined to hit .271 with 34 home runs in High-A and Double-A (106 games). This type of offensive power is what the D-Backs will miss with the departure of Miguel Montero, but even Montero's numbers were not that impressive recently, combining for 39 home runs the past three seasons.

That opens the door for O'Brien to impress this spring training and give Arizona some pop behind the plate.

Brandon Drury

2 of 3

The D-Backs acquired Drury in the blockbuster Justin Upton trade of 2013.

While that trade certainly didn't pan out in Arizona, Drury's stock is rising. Besides his infield versatility (1B, 2B, 3B), Drury has crushed minor league pitching.

Last season in High-A and Double-A, he combined to hit .299 with 23 home runs in 136 games. He also clubbed 42 doubles.

The D-Backs infield has the potential to be flexible with Aaron Hill coming off a disappointing season and Yasmany Tomas attempting to play third base (he played outfield in Cuba). There is always a possibility Tomas could move back to the outfield, opening up another infield spot.

If Drury continues to mash the baseball, the 22-year-old could finally atone for the Upton trade that left the organization spiraling into mediocrity the last few seasons.

Socrates Brito

3 of 3

Socrates. What a name.

But Arizona fans should get to know the young outfielder because he has the potential to break out this spring.

The 22-year-old will have an uphill battle with A.J. Pollock, David Peralta, Ender Inciarte, Mark Trumbo and potentially Yasmany Tomas to compete with.

However, Socrates Brito's offensive statistics have been impressive throughout his minor league career to compliment his blazing speed.

Last year in High-A, Brito hit .293 with 10 home runs in 128 games. More impressively, he stole 38 bases. Compare that to another speedster, Inciarte, who only stole 19 bases in 118 games at the major league level.

Of course, stealing bases at the highest level is more difficult, but Brito has the potential to wreak havoc on the bases if given an opportunity this season.
