ST LOUIS, MO - JULY 14: U.S. President Barack Obama walks off of the field with Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals after throwing out the first pitch at the 2009 MLB All-Star Game at Busch Stadium on July 14, 2009 in St Louis, Missouri. (Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images)

The St Louis Cardinals are the team the Padres hope to be when they grow up. St. Louis has consistently spanked the Padres for 40 years, and own a sparkling 9-0 playoff record against San Diego.

I always envy the Cards fans, who get Matt Holiday for an early Christmas present, while Padres' fans get to unwrap Josh Wilson. The St Louis Cardinals are the classiest organization in damn near all of professional sports, and any other team would be smart to emulate them.

Last nights 9-0 (symbolic) pounding by the Cards only reinforces my opinion that until the Padres are a better organization than the Cardinals, these beatings will continue.

Don't hold your breath waiting for that to happen anytime soon, but hopefully, before I die, the Padres will grow into this type of team.

For the present, while I see tangible improvement in the Padres of late, the Cardinals are more talented at every position, and Cardinals management will undoubtedly continue to trade for what ever they need at the major league level, while the Padres sit on the sideline and watch.

This makes for a loooong season.

The series continues tonight with the Padres Tim Stauffer (1-4) facing the Cards Joel Pinero (10-9) at 4:10 pm
