The QB Battle

The biggest question coming into training camp for the Green Bay Packers is will there be a QB competition? Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy have said that Aaron Rodgers has the job but don't think Brian Brohm will sit idly by and let that happen.

Brian Brohm probably could have been a top five pick in last year's NFL draft but he opted to stay at school. In 2007 he had his best statistical year as a college QB but his team was awful. Some speculate that he is the most NFL ready QB coming out of college this year.

Rodgers on the other hand has been sitting on the bench for the last three years and looked very good against the Cowboys last year, but people question his durability and toughness, which is something that cannot happen if you play QB for the Green Bay Packers.

Ultimate Winner: Aaron Rodgers

Other Position battles

Some other Positions that I think could be open this year are 2nd WR, FS, 2nd DT, WLB, and 3rd CB

Second WR

  • B/R Ticket Guide

The Candidates:Greg Jennings, James Jones, Jordy Nelson

Obviously Jennings is the favorite going in but James Jones and Jordy Nelson add size and strength to the position. Jennings is the fastest but Nelson and Jones both have better hands.

The Winner: Jennings, no real surprise

Free Safety

The Candidates: Aaron Rouse, Nick Collins

This will be the closest Battle in training camp in my opinion. Collins has never lived up to the expectations that the coaches have put on him and Rouse showed flashes last year. Not to mention that Rouse is 6'4 225 and Collins is 5'11 200.

The Winner: Rouse, I think this is a case where the incumbent falls

Second Defensive Tackle

The Candidates: Johny Jolly, Justin Harell

This will be a close one, Jolly showed he could be a consistent player last year before getting hurt. Ted Thompson saw enough potential in Harell to take him 16th overall last year.

The Winner: Harell, I think the packers will give him a chance to live up to his first round billing.

Linebacker

The Candidates: Brady Poppinga, Brandon Chillar

I don't think this will be as close as people think, Poppinga is better against the run and on third down the Packers like to go to the nickle formation anyways

The Winner: Poppinga easily

3rd Corner Back

The Candidates: Will Blackmon, Patrick Lee

Blackmon has been in the system awhile and he should know what he is doing by now. He is a great athlete and will probably be our punt returner this year. Patrick Lee is the best player they could have taken at that spot in the draft in my opinion. He played press coverage at Auburn and has good size and athleticism.

The Winner:Lee, experience in the system will help him

The fact that there are so many positions up for grabs shows how much depth the Packers have.

  1. Still Think a RB postion battle could be brewing as well. Im still thinking Grant was a one year wonder. The reason i think this is cuase i notice alot in the early season of last year he struggled alot barely gained anything on any runs before denver game, i honestly believe jackson will become the starter next year at some point, but i do wish we would get beaver back in camp that guy can pound the ball for a 5-7 frame, we jsut need to see how he can handle the pros

  2. I like your analysis, but I'm gonna have to disagree with you on your linebacker and cornerback stuff. I don't think they'd sign Chillar if they didn't think he could contribute, and I expect them to give him every opportunity to win that starting job.

As far as the cornerbacks go, you forgot to mention two pretty serious contenders there. Jarret Bush, though he didn't perform that well last season, is actually the incumbent there and Tramon Williams also played. Williams, I believe, has the best shot at becoming the 3rd cornerback at the start of the year right now. Blackmon didn't really ever play there, even when he was healthy last year. Lee, although he did play a lot of press at Auburn, doesn't exactly have experience in the Packers' system yet. blackmon, out of the two you mention, is the one who would get the nod based on experience in doing what they run.

  3. Blackman has to prove to stay healthy. Bush is a goner. Williams was not a draft pick. take it from there.

  4. Jennings has better hands than Jones, and got better throughout the season. Jones production actually dropped off(no pun intended) near the end of the season, and I remember him being noted for his drops. That may be just because of his first year in a 16 game season though...
Jordy Nelson just looks good. With his deep threat ability and reckless play over the middle I'm just excited to see what he can do in the slot or as a situational guy.

  5. I think Brett Favre is going to win the QB battle.
