West Virginia Mountaineers Have a Devine Future with Noel

Ben GradyMay 15, 2008

West Virginia's colors are Gold and Blue, but the quarterbacks are White and Brown—Pat White and Jarrett Brown, to be exact.

White, the starter, can make some very impressive throws, but has yet to have a huge passing game in his career. He finished the 2007 season averaging 12 out of 18 completions a game; adding 143.6 yards and 1.1Ā touchdowns (14 on the season)Ā through the air.

In White's most accurate game last season, he went 18 for 20 against an East Carolina team that finished the season 8-5.

White has yet to prove himself a passer that will make it at the next level—but he is a baseball player playing football. I believe that a big passing game, even season, is in him—despite his reliance on running the football. Last season White averaged 16.4 carries, 111.2 yards, and 1.1 touchdowns per game.

WhiteĀ is alsoĀ prone to getting hurt, leaving the field three times in three games last season due to injury. West Virginia fell in two of those games.

Jarrett Brown is the QB I have my eye on, because he has yet to start a game and lose. The only game he has started was a very cold one, when West Virginia hosted Rutgers on December 2, 2006. A freshman at the time, Brown took over for Pat White in a game-time decision, and came out with the win in triple overtime.

Brown stands at 6'4'' and 240 lbs, which is a pretty good size for a mobile quarterback. Packed with a great arm, he can really move down the field, and doesn't have a bad jump shot either. (Brown played for WVU Men's Basketball, which made it to the Sweet 16 this past season.)

Over six games, Brown averaged 5.1-8 with 56.8 yards, and 0.3 touchdowns., He mostly came in when WVU had the game won, or White needed a breather. Don't forget, he also averaged seven carries for 46.7 yards, and 0.4 touchdowns.

As Jarrett Brown gets more and more experience, I look forward to seeing what he can do. He may become a more mobile and consistent Byron Leftwich. If Pat White fails to get the job done this season, or takes a lick on a scramble, you can be sure Jarrett Brown will be ready to play.

West Virginia took a hard hit on the backs and receivers area, losing Owen Schmitt, Steve Slaton, and Darius Reynaud. Not to worry too much, because Noel Devine is sure to be explosive in the backfield, with his quick and elusive game play.

As a freshman, Devine only averaged 6.6 carriesĀ inĀ elevenĀ games, with 57 yards and 0.5 touchdowns. Devine ran all around Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, picking up 108 yards on 13 carries, with two scores from 17 and 65 yards. Noel can catch and run as well, with a long reception from earlier in the season for 90 yards.

Noel Devine, clearly, is the guy to lookout for on every snap.
