A sweet left-footed curler from Bastien Schweinsteiger handed Germany a 12th minute lead at Azerbaijan.
The French had to wait until four minutes before the break to score in the Faroe Islands, Toulouse striker Andre-Pierre Gignac spun in the box and fired a low shot in the corner.
Russia 2 - Argentina 3 (International Friendly, August 12, 2009) A slick Russian attack tore through the Argentina backline in the 17th minute and Igor Semshov was sent clean through on goal before firing a low shot in the far corner. The Argentinians began to impose themselves as the half wore on, and on the stroke of halftime Kun Aguero smacked an unstoppable swerving bullet into the top corner. (First half highlights here.) Maradona threw on Emiliano Papa and Lisandro Lopez at the break, and within sixty seconds the pair combined with Lopez put the South Americans in front. Maradona then showed the midas touch just before the hour as the coach brought on Napoli’s Jesus Datolo and within thirty seconds the striker had bagged a third. With just over ten minutes to go a deflected Roman Pavyuchenko free-kick cut the deficit by half.
Russia U21 3 - Italy U21 2 (International Friendly, August 12, 2009) Alberto Paloschi took advantage of a terrible mix-up between the Russian keeper and centre-back to give Italy U21 a first half lead. The hosts turned the match around after the break with goals from Fedor Smolov and a Pavel Mamalev penalty. The match ended with a goal-flurry as Aleksandr Salugin put notched the Russian’s third before Andrea Rispoli pulled another Italian goal back in injury time.
South Korea 1 - Paraguay 0 (International Friendly, August 12, 2009) The hosts had much the better of the first half (highlights here) without finding a breakthrough. Eventually the Koreans made their dominance count as Monaco forward Park Chu-young claimed an 84th minute winner.
